Should I play the campaign

I started the campaign in 1.01, something like 3 hours put into it, then switched to random maps. Now the question is, is the campaign fun and worth the time spent, or can I safely stick to random maps?

ps: I already put quite some hours in random maps, so perhaps this can be a welcome change for a while?

Definitely stick with random maps, and if you're looking for a change try some of the excellent mods.

The campaign is short, bland, and boring! I beat it but ended up wishing I could get those hours of my life back.

Thats funny, I've been wondering about the campaign too because of logged 200+ hours of random maps and haven't even looked at the campaign.

Can I add another question in addition to the orginal post... does the campaign explain any of the lore / background / more info about the race etc at all?

I played the Campaign and thought it was pretty fun.  Also gives you more of an introduction to the existing factions than just looking at the Sovereign and Race stats when starting a game.  You'll also get to build a boat, so yay!

it's interesting enough to play through once or twice but personally I found it less a campaign than a scenario, it's only three or so maps and I can't help compare it badly to other campaigns like heroes of might and magic which may have seven individual multi map story arcs that interconnect and feature all the characters and creatures. FE is just a teaser

I enjoyed the story of the campaign, but the mechanics and tempo and bugs was horribly underwhelming. I would still define the campaign to be a tutorial to the potential that can be found in the sandbox mode.
