I can't seem to get a good start.

I can't seem to get a good start.

This game is brutally difficult for me on Normal difficulty.

I can never get a good start, and the computer rapidly outpaces me. I've never really had this problem with any other game.

One of my biggest problems is there is I have such a hard time expanding because there is a pile of BRUTAL monsters sitting right by every choice location to expand to. It takes me so long to get my heroes powerful enough to destroy them, it's silly.

I also find my champions so weak, they die in just a hit or two, even at higher levels (like level 10ish) to just a few hits from middling monsters. Defense doesn't seem to stop attacks well at all, and the monsters have stupid brutal attack power. By the time I get a foothold, the computer has built every wonder and is swarming me...

What am I doing wrong? I played WoM and never had 1/10th this trouble getting going.

Yes, I agree and it's very annying...I find that melee is much easier to playing than power playing (mage stuff)

When playing as kingdom, I rare, it's very rare to get those horse, even metal....crazy...

Playing magic in early/mid game is more difficult, as you need mana, spells, and good gear for magicians,at the time you develop magic instead a melee champ. Magic is more a support at these moments, and its power only comes as the game goes on.

Anyway, is perfectly possible to play that way, focusing on civic and warfare. Once learning game basics, you have the foundation to try magic paths.

I think on Challenging, the AI gets a 5/3/2 start every time. I almost never get that start.

Seems like it. Great when they turn them into fortresses. :D Free powerful forts!

I usually get stuck with like 3/2/1 for a good start. I don't worry about City stats that much any more, placement seems more important. River/Trees, Stat Resources (Clay or Farms), and decent amounts of iron are most important to me. Though I seldom get much iron...

Thanks. The other'd grown stale so it'd been on mind to update it. Then the dichotomy of fierce Magnar on a cuddly Pony come round and brought a laugh, followed by a ponder session of duality.  Random things on the net seemed to conspire a fostering of thought down this line. Sorta found myself working on the avatar in the midst of it all :)

Finally got a good start going, when along about turn 100 a Guardian Statue backed up by a giant stack of scrap golems decides to go on a rampage through my lands obliterating all it sees. The stack has about 600 HP...

That's a Scrapyard Wildlands stack. They seem to enjoy wandering. I'm of the opinion that Wildlands monsters should be barred from leaving their Wildland, so every now and then if one has decided to just go wander halfway across the map (literally, sometimes), I load up in cheat mode and flat out delete it. We already mod the game to our tastes....I'm gonna 'mod' a ludicrously errant stack right the hell out during gameplay if I have to.
