What is it?

Sins of a Solar Empire is an amazing strategy game of the best kind: one that you can play for hours on end for years without getting bored. Unfortunately, some things do tend to get repetative. Some of the first things that became an annoyance for me were the announcements, those short soundclips that play when you discover an enemy faction or every few minutes before the pirates launch. A few years ago, I decided to remake these announcements for the group I play with. I've had them for a few years, and was recently talked into sharing them with the community.

What are they like?

I felt that the announcements that shipped with SoaSE were too "ominous", sounding more like something went very wrong than another race was discovered. I set out to try and make them a little more subtle, more reflective of each race, and most importantly I did my best to make them feel like they belong in the game. You really have to try them to see!

Pirates:

First and foremost is the Pirate Announcement, the one you hear most often during a Sins game. I aimed to make this one much more subtle, it's a bit shorter, a bit quieter, and hopefully a bit less abrasive. The picture I tried to paint is one of the dark mysteries and dangers of space.

TEC:

My goal with the TEC was to make the announcement sound more "grand". You have just arrived at a world filled with busy civilian ships, bustling economy vessels, and the glory of human architecture.

Advent:

I intended for the Advent announcement sound to more mystical. You just arrived at a world filled with masters of the mind, an entire civilization working to become one consciousness, and architecture built to praise the Unity.

Vasari:

The Vasari announcement was a little bit harder to do, but I thought that it was the one that needed the most work. I aimed to make the Vasari announcement sound more mysterious. You just arrived at a world filled with vicious aliens fleeing through the universe, only stopping to enslave entire civilizations, with architecture both exotic and terrifying to behold.

How Do I Use Them?

Fortunately, Sins is incredibly easy to mod. Although this is not a traditional mod, it still works in the same way.

1. Click the "Download" button on the Soundcloud widget for any announcement you want to use.

2. Navigate to your mod folder (C:\Users\YourUserName\Documents\My Games\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire Rebellion\[Your Version of Sins])

3. Create a folder named anything you like, "S.Taiseiyou's Announcement Mod" if you so desire!

4. Inside that folder, create another folder named "Sound".

5. Copy the downloaded .OGG files into the "Sound" folder.

6. Load up Sins and be sure to enable the mod. If you are using other mods that change the sounds of the game, be sure to move this mod higher in the load order to ensure the songs get played. Given the nature of the mod, there should be no crashes or conflicts of any kind.

Thanks!

Thanks to Ironclad for making such a great RTS with incredibly cool lore! The lore is what inspired this the most.

Sounds cool. I'd love to have a mod that only has a new created unit note that its been created once every 10 ships or so ... its terribly annoying when building in bulk.

Add a huge string of silence to the .ogg file.

Though there may be a way to do that via txt, I've never looked. (I'm thinking a huge sound cooldown)
