Skybox request

Dear Devs,

Thank you so much for an awesome game. I like every bit of Sins Rebellion and I'm really enjoying it.

Just one small caveat, though. Is there any chance that some of the old skyboxes, like the red and bright blue ones, might return even if modified in some form or other, and is an upcoming patch going to bring those back as well as the ones we saw in the trailers and screens for Sins Rebellion that are not currently in game?

Thanks! :D

having 6 or 10 more would rock.

I was hoping for more support.

At the least I hope they get rid of the green one and put a red one back in. But what other skyboxes that were never in the game were in the trailer?

I agree, but I just hope that we can just add them or something... :S

So, I tried something drastic. I copy-pasted the old skybox files into the new Sins Rebellion, and they worked only partially: there's this huge gaping hole in the background with all of the old skyboxes as if the fabric of reality itself was being torn apart. I just hope the devs add more spice to this variety.

The old skyboxes and the new ones have the same file names. If you didn't rename them, you probably lost the new skyboxes. A shame that it didn't graphically work.

I know there was at least one interesting brownish-orange skybox in the early screenshots that looked good but I have never seen it in-game.

It would be great if this could be added in.

The PC Gamer article's last screenshot of the Kultorask and other ships is set against one of the old SoaSE backgrounds, the red-orange one. That one was one of my favorites as was the other red one and the bright blue one.

Hopefully a patch could fix this. The team has done it in the past.

I'm sure it's a memory limit issue.

The same reason we did not more exciting planets this time around, but more generic ones.(dwarf planet).

I want the bright/heaven styled skybox back - just because it was so different than the others.

i think that the reason they did not include that one is the shadows will not show.. its bright ....

Not everyone wants shadows if their machines can't run them. The game runs fine for me with low ship numbers, but late game, the framerate starts to get choppier, and much more than it ever did with SoaSE, Entrenchment, and Diplomacy. But anyways, I digress... If that was the case, then they should change the green skybox as well as it is too... bright.

I just hope they bring some of the old ones back... I really miss them.

Yeah, the game loads up all of the textures (which includes skyboxes) at run time, so even if a particular skybox isn't being seen, it's still in memory.  As you can imagine, they're rather big, so adding more tends to result in out of memory crashes.

Thank you for your response, Yarlen.

Is there any chance that it will be addressed in the future? I mean, the skybox issue is not a game-breaker, but I was wondering if future patches will smooth performance further and/or make new skyboxes available... or at least have the option to download the skyboxes in a fixed format to replace some of the current ones if we wish?

His first picture is one of the new Rebellion skyboxes, the ones with the yellowish nebula in a ring around the center, just from an odd angle. The second one is one of the two Red skyboxes that got removed.

Totally agree Yarlen, but how did you decide which skyboxes to remove? Whoever wanted to keep the green skybox in the dev team should be shot immediately. }:) The remainder should put one of the red ones back. :P

It was an overall quality issue. Some of the older skyboxes weren't very big (pixels) and compressed pretty badly.

For the record, it was the brown dust-cloud looking one that I was referring to.  However, I loaded up Sins real quick and that just happened to be the one that came up on the menu screen and loaded automatically on a quick game.

I guess I hadn't really noticed it before because I've mostly been looking at the maps "top down" and haven't rotated the camera much lately and I was expecting that skybox to be more brown all around.  The skybox is mostly black except for the "side edge" and a few light clouds.

So, it's there, cool.
