So with Impulse over to Gamestop and the digital distribution competition no longer something we’re participating in we’ve developed a new digital updating client – Stardock Central (what’s old is new again).

But unlike the old “big” client, the new one is very…very simple.

(sorry for the lame screenshot, I’m caught up on my games on this new machine and haven’t installed any apps yet).

Your Stardock purchases will show up here once you login. Just pick what you want to install (or update) and press a button and it’ll use our massively fast CDN to install it (we have a long-term agreement with our CDN except now the only thing using its bandwidth is our stuff so the download speeds are kind of ridiculous – it’s like being the only guy on a 1 gigabyte line).

The new settings includes an option to have it simply update your software automatically.  So you can either choose to stick with older versions or always have it up to date.

OK, let’s say you don’t like to have to install a client at all.  That’s fine too.  You can update your software and games via the web as well:

Pick whether it’s software or games and it’ll look at your account, when you last updated, and off you go.  The installer will figure out what you need to install (i.e. if you have multiple machines with different versions) and off you go.

It’s designed to be as streamlined as possible.

The cool thing is you only need to download the 750MB Metro libraries once. Then the installer itself is only 1 megabyte.

Haha.  Truth.  While the forums openly display the value given to you from positive feedback, it doesn't have any way for people to take away Karma for the wrong things done.  If Karma could be taken away, I'd surely be in the negative numbers with all of the people I've pissed off at one point or another.  You'd probably be there because of the issues with Elemental.

Will there be an option for Alpha or Beta's (Object Desktop Subscribers)? We may not want betas on our system or will all be listed and we can make our own choices?  Will it show our Master Skins, purchases from stardock and wincustomize?, and other purchases from the store or just our Apps? Alpha's/beta's/etc. (basically anything non-production) will be offered in a future update. This initial version of Stardock Central is designed to be as simple as possible, and we'll be adding features to it as we learn more about how you guys use the app and what it is you want to be added.

I don't mind the buttons in the first pic, but the buttons in the second pic are a different style for some reason (font?) and look kludgy.

The browse button needs a nicer alignment.

Something looks to have gone wrong in the second pic. It is still in development, after all :p Don't worry though, the buttons and text will look great and consistent across the entire app when it's ready to launch.

I'll jump out on a limb here & let you know you can pretty much bank on us wanting access to alpha/beta versions.  I'd expect that had already been 'learned'. ;)

It might be better if they were only available through the store.....that would make it a "distinct" choice to use the beta software. Currently there's a lot of people who use the betas and shouldn't.
