I was wondering:
Can you make custom 3d models in another program and import them into the game as ships?
I didn't try it, but while browsing the library I saw custom ships as well as ship components, so it seems doable.
It's very doable. The modeling is harder than the import process, provided you have a program like 3DsMax that produces the appropriate file type. Blender and other open-source programs have a bit more trouble.
So it is possible to have a Pikachu ship.
It would be hilarious to see Pikachu zapping battleships! 
I need someone to tell me/us, how to import 3D models into the game. Plenty 3D models out there, would be nice to have them inside the game.
