Could there be a few more options added to the random map generator? For instance, in small maps at least, it would be nice if we could pick "distance from the enemy" - if one wants to play a random map to simulate the cramped situation in 5s (2, 3, 4 jumps away from enemy HW), playing a random-single-huge is the only way to do that, which is overkill and can get a bit processor-heavy. If there could be something like "random-small-short" for this and "random-small-long" for the standard current random small, that'd be great.
Or, it'd be nice if we could pick a random map such that although we don't know the layout of the planets, we can know what general relative position everyone's going to be in - so that someone in the host's slot is always next to the player in slot 2, etc. This way we could actually anticipate specialized roles (like being in the eco slot or etc).
And if there was any possible strategic option for large team games (5s) other than "rush or defend ASAP or you die" I imagine it would open up more opportunities. For instance, setting up opposing teams across the galaxy from each other would be an interesting variation. If the only option for large random team games is cramped positioning in a roughly circular pattern... well, strategy and play styles become more limited than they could be. More options for random maps could make online MP much more interesting.
That said, fixing the random map generator such that the phase lane glitch doesn't happen is more important. Hopefully progress is being made on that.
