I know they won't start it without pink ponies and bear cavalry, but I was under the impression they would start the Beta without good AI.

That's what happened the last time and look what they pushed out the door. I don't want to see that mess again so I say take as long as you like Brad before opening up the beta. I want to see good ai not a pile of crap ai even in beta.

*Ugh* I have had enough of crappy Ponies. The Runic Games forums are full of them.

I will support Tronies (Troll ponies) however. A worthy opponent, the likes of which ye have never seen!

Lol, the AI is Achilles' heel of WoM. And Stardock just making new shiny things for next game, "ohh, forget about ai programmers". FE is a priori an epic fail.

Thanks for sharing. Already condemning the game to failure before it's even released.

Anyway, since you like Latin so much:

Antiquis temporibus, nati tibi similes in rupibus ventosissimis exponebantur ad necem.

The AI for GalCiv was one of the best I've ever seen, so I'll give Stardock the benefit of the doubt one last time. Brad's done a pretty good job of explaining the development problems with E:WofM and why it was such a disappointment on release. All the subsequent changes and tweaks to game play have probably made AI dev pretty much impossible.

However, this shouldn't be the case for FE, so I expect great things again (maybe not for the beta, but definitely for release).

Well at least it wont be worse than WoM AI, right?

Right? :pout:

AI is the last thing you do.  It doesn't do much good to code AI while the game is being significantly altered.  I wouldn't want Brad to put real time into the AI before getting some real playtest time so we can get feedback on whats fun, what we need more of, what we need less of.

The decision is, do we lock our design, do AI work, then release playtest for minor tweaks (mana cost of a spell, training cost of some weapons).  Or do we will release for playtest feedback, be open to feedback for significant changes (like halving the amount of monster lairs on the map, doubling the amount of xp you can get from quests, or adding a new spell), then do the AI.  This is Stardock, so you know what answer that will be.  More open, more feedback.

We will get people who will speak poorly of us when the early beta version doesn't have good AI.  But there will be far more people who understand and offer great feedback.  And in the end the game will be better for it.

I just had to say, if we had signatures, this would be an awesome one.

There's been a lot more info on FE lately- has made me think that we're starting to get closer.  I'm also thinking the AI work in WOM will help with FE some.

Sounds like the correct way of doing things. As long as it is made abundantly clear that the AI will not be good for the early beta version then no one should have any basis for complaining. Naturally, some people will of course but they will look foolish for doing it. Especially if the Caveat is stickied.

Stardock.
