Little Help with Armour please?

I held out from getting sucked into Elemental until 1.2.  I'm having a great time, however I keep running into a really bad problem: my opponents get high levels of Armour quickly, and then declare War on me.  Unless I've dedicated all my research to only Military, giving myself also advanced Armour and Weapons with enough damage to actually hit the, my Units can't even hit the attackers!  In three seperate games, an Army of literally two guys wipe out my entire Kingdom because I simply can't hit them.

I feel like I'm beating my head against a wall here, and I'm sure there is something I'm doing very wrong.  I didn't have this problem pre-1.2, or at least I don't recall having it.  I don't like being forced to simply research Military - that's not how I play.

So, can someone offer any advice as to how to get around this?

The game is called War of Magic for a reason. Magic is your friend. Learn it, treasure it. Magic ignores armour class. Go to Mods and download Murteas Grimoire. It will help you out, especially in the early game. Give as much priority to the magic tree as is practical. Get an earth elemental if you have an earth shard. Get Firestorm if you have a fire shard. Get Winter's Grasp if you have a water shard. Create a custom sovereign and give him or her the assasin trait. Also, look for champions with special combat abilities like critical strike. Finally, give Ythril bows to your sovereign and champions. A sovereign and a couple of the kids armed with Ythril bows and good offensive spells, along with a couple of heavy hitter champions as guard dogs will roll over anything in the game no matter how well armoured.

Learn to play to maximize research output. Dedicate most of your cities to spamming libraries and research bonuses. The game is best played with city building simply being a way to get as much research as possible. All other resources are secondary. As for what to research you should research mostly military armor and weapons but also some civ stuff to get resources and city levels, the buildings that reduce build time on improvements are good for spamming libraries.
