Surprising discovery

Until recently, I always thought the I-League were basically a glorified "pop-up" minor race along the lines of the Vegans. I know in GalCiv 1, they were much more interesting, but I had assumed that was one of the things lost with the nerfage of minors in GalCiv 2.

Then I fired up a game of TOA and saw this:

This was one of three different Iconian systems that defected to the I-League over a short period of time. It didn't happen to anyone else, which leads me to suspect that this "defection" process works best on civilizations that are doing badly - I never met the Iconians, but all indications were that they were at the bottom of the galactic pecking order, and they surrendered just before I quit. Possibly the I-League's ability to do this was reactivated for TOA, or possibly it was always present but the conditions were never right. I'm not sure.

At any rate, it's great to know that I can still be surprised by this game after all this time.

The I-League event is a real ball buster as you can end up losing many planets to them when it spawns. Last time i got lucky and only lost 3 but i have lost up to 20 before LOL

It always pays to have some troop transports sitting behind the front lines to retake planets.

So you have encountered the I-League stealing planets like this before? Or are you talking about the Jagged Knife (who, incidentally, also showed up this game)?

Was there any pattern (low approval, low population) to the planets that went over to them? I suspect that there's a reason it only occurred to the Iconians in this game (so far, anyway - no one's bothered the I-League yet), and that that reason might have something to do with why I've never seen this happen before.

Normally, in DL, the I-League just shows up with 1 planet, builds up a little, then gets wiped out by a major race that fancies their planet. I've never seen them steal planets like this before, but I've never seen them in TOA either - in fact, I thought they might have been removed altogether until now.

I've never seen the I-League pop up in GalCiv2.  In GalCiv1, I was usually a major cause of their formation by using my spies to tank approval ratings across the galaxy.

Pure speculation, but if the mechanic is anything like GC1, the chance of a defection would be based on low approval.

Man, I used to love those pop-ups.  The I-League and Fundamentalists were awesome in GC1.

Just had the I-League pop-up in my current game and the amount of planets they get is down to approval. I was running low on BC's so had my approval at 20% when they spawned and lost 6 planets to them :(

Well, in this game at least the I-League is still pretty awesome. They have a nice homeworld and one of their Iconian planets was a well-developed class 16, so they've been building up quite well. No more defections so far - the average galactic approval is in the 50-60 percent range, so it's probably unlikely. They've been flying under the radar, too, which has let them build up a decent little fleet. Of course, now all heck has broken loose - the galactic superpowers are at each other's throats and the Dread Lords have invaded - so we'll see where this goes.

I really wish there was a way to mod the pop-ups. Based on the I-League's performance here, if I could give them the same treatment as the normal minors, they might really be something.

So, I finally had a planet defect to the I League while running a test game.  One of the Krynn's worlds had the low-morale sad face and eventually split off.  Thing is, there was no I League in the game.  I was controlling a minor race to watch the majors develop, and the planet defected to me!

Is this what normally happens?
