Tournament

Whew – really glad I back up any lengthy posts at another location.  That would have been annoying.  Anyway, the forum appears to have accidentally eaten my last tourney post, so here it is, restored.

What is the schedule?

We will have a tourney every 2 weeks – so put it on your calendar and plan accordingly.

  • 2/20/2011 – 2v2 Practice Tourney – Noon EST
  • 3/6/2011 – 3v3 Practice Tourney – Noon EST
  • 3/20/2011 – 2v2 Cash Tourney – Noon EST
  • 4/3/2011 – 3v3 Cash Tourney – Noon EST

What are the rules?

Each tournament will have varied rules.  They will be announced approximately 1 week before the tourney begins.  Here are the rules for the upcoming practice tournament.

  • The tournament is 3v3
  • The tournament is single elimination (you lose once and you are out)
  • Standard Demigod selection rules – no doubles allowed.  No random dg selection.
  • The map is cataract using default settings (AI settings will be on low gold/xp and high HP)
  • When the brackets are created (this happens right at the start of the tourney), the team that is on the top of the bracket will be on the light side and the team below them will be on the dark side.
  • Light side must pick their dg’s and ready up 1st (they MAY NOT change their demigods after they click ready).  The dark side will wait until after the light side has readied up to pick their demigod selections
  • For each following game, the team that finished their game in the previous match in the shortest amount of time may choose which side they want.
  • All players must use uberfix 1.03 (you can download it here:  http://www.box.net/shared/qf7lhj1zjl)
  • All players MUST register using www.JeeLounge.com – you CANNOT participate if you do not create an account there
  • Replays for all games must be uploaded to the jee site by someone on the winning team.

How do I get setup on JeeLounge?

If you haven’t registered on the Jee sites yet, just follow these 3 simple instructions below.  You’ll still need to register for tournaments, etc, but this will get you added to the system.  You only need to register and setup your account 1 time (eg you don’t have to do this ever again)

  1. Go to www.JeeLounge.com and create an account.
  2. Go here:  http://www.jeelounge.com/teamdg/group/home/ and request membership to our Demigod group (called TeamDG).
  3. Go here:  http://www.jeelounge.com/user/favorites/1/games Click on about me.  Click on games.  Then fill in info for demigod and set yourself to active.

How to form a team on the JeeLounge Site (you need to)?

  1. Find a teammate.  You can use this thread, pm’s, or whatever you want to track down a partner.  You can even use the Jee site to send pm’s to anyone that has already joined the teamDG group.
  2. Post in THIS thread letting us know that you will be participating and who is on your team.
  3. Once you have found a team, login to the JeeLounge site and click on Network (its on the bar that shows home/about me/network/stats, etc near the top of the page).
  4. Click on create a clan (only 1 person on your team needs to do this)
  5. Call the clan whatever you want and fill in whatever info you want.  Be sure to set membership condition to free.  That will create your clan.
  6. Next, send an invitation to your teammate.  Once they accept your invitation, you will see them in your clan.
  7. Click on create team.  Call the team whatever you want.
  8. After its created, click on edit members and add your teammate to your team and you are done.

How do I register for the tournament?

  1. Click here for the tourney page (http://www.jeesports.com/tournament/details/1/26).  Whoever is the team leader on your team has to do this.
  2. Click on sign up and select your team from the drop down box.  Then click ok.  You are registered.

What is check in?

We use a process called check in for our tournaments.  The purpose of check in is so that we know that teams that registered for the tournament are actually ready to play their games.  We also use the check in process so that only teams indicating that they are present are placed on the brackets.  This makes it much easier to get the tournament started (instead of waiting around and hoping your opponent shows up).  Be aware that even if a team has registered for a tournament, if they do not check in, they cannot participate in the tournament.    The check in period is 45 minutes before the tournament starts.

How do I check in?

  1. Click on the following link to the tournament page (http://www.jeesports.com/tournament/details/1/26)
  2. Click on the check in icon.
  3. Choose your team from the drop down box.
  4. Click ok.

What do I do the day of the tournament?

  1. Check in anytime 45 minutes before the tournament begins (see above)  – remember, if you team doesn’t check in, you can’t play
  2. Once the tournament officially begins (Noon EST), check out the brackets page to see who your team is playing first (remember, if you are on top in the bracket, your team is on the light side)
  3. Host a game for your opponent to join or join a game they have hosted
  4. Play your game
  5. Report your win and upload a replay of the game
  6. Check the brackets again and see who you are playing next.  If your opponents are still in game, just host a lobby asking them to join and wait for them to wrap up their game.

How do I report my wins?

  1. Go to the tournament page (http://www.jeesports.com/tournament/details/1/26)
  2. Click on the game you just played
  3. Fill in the win/loss results (its pretty self explanatory)
  4. Upload the replay (the replay will be your last game save if you do this immediately after winning)

Disqualifications

Thankfully, we have not had a need to disqualify any teams yet during our tournaments, but here are the ground rules.

  1. Intentionally desyncing a game will result in a forfeit.  If you believe this has occurred, send me a copy of your DemigodLog.txt file.  I’ll request some additional files if needed.  Hopefully we can continue to keep this nonsense out of our tournaments going forward.
  2. Long delays between matches.  The goal of these single elimination tournaments are to have a series of quick games – not to make players wait on you until you are ready or feel like playing.  All players that want to participate are expected to be ready starting at noon EST and until they are either eliminated or win the tournament.  Games should all be started within 30 minutes (eg if game 1 of the tourney has not started after 30 minutes, the team that is not ready will be disqualified.  So, please be considerate of everyone else’s time and be ready to play!

I'd love to hear some feedback from folks for this tourney.  Here is mine:

1 - I need to make sure I setup the tourneys properly on the jee site.  If I don't, be can't host replays there and track wins/losses.  On the plus side, I created a test tourney and it looks like I figured out what I'm doing wrong. At any rate, my apologies fellas (and lady).

People really need to learn to be on time.  I was told we had like 3 other teams that didn't register in time for the tourney, so I recreated the tournament from scratch at noon and changed the start time to 12:30.  Heh - we hold the tourneys every 2 weeks.  That should be roughly enough time to avoid having to form a team at the last second (I know at least tokyo's team has been actively looking for a 3rd for like the past 4-5 days or so... and I also know about the power issues kira had this morning, but baring that - cmon - register in advance... ask folks in advance).  It also seemed like no game started until 1PM so it took another half hour for folks to ready up and get playing.  That's not the world's biggest deal, but I have noticed that in just about every tourney, it takes an extra 30 minutes to get that first match going.

And last, it was apparently a bit of a pain to get team 5 to show up for the final game.  I guess there was a language barrier there, but there was an hour delay where orcun's team had to wait around to get that last game going.

Well I've already written in my previous post (before the tourney), but I might mention some things again.

People must create teams at least one day before the tourney starts! Otherwise, even if people join TeamDG in time, even if they are ready to form a team, they cannot do that, because Pacov is probably busy, sleeping, etc. (nothing against him, because I fully understand that he has other things to do and that time is pretty early for him). If people joined day earlier, then last day, they only would need to check in (Pacov not needed). Of course they could create their own clan, etc., but it takes time, which they usually don't have. People are not very familiar with JeeSites and until they understand how everything works - they are not able to register anymore.

Tourney start time is not equal to registration beginning time nor check in time! When tourney starts - you cannot do anything. When check in starts, you can only check your team in (you CANNOT REGISTER ANYMORE). So registration time ends, when check in time starts (last time 45 mins before the tourney). Moreover, if you register in tourney your team, you don't need to participate if you cannot find last teammate by the check in time. Just don't check in and you won't play. My personal example of how I did things - got teammates pretty soon after last tourney; they were busy, so had to form team only few days before tourney; registered team to tourney ~1 day before (there were some problems, but overall was fine); checked in some minutes before the tourney started. No sudden rush to register or anything and I could have actually waited until ~5 mins until the start to just check in (press one button).

Don't play other matches since ~1 hour before and until tourney ends. It's really not funny, when you are looking for a third member in team and you are not even sure if your already found member will play, because he is in another match (~20 mins before tourney). Respect your teammates a bit... With opponents during tourney time the same thing. If you need to wait ~2 hours until your match, then... well maybe one game you could play, but be aware that a match can take 1h or longer. Do something else... or worst case scenario (what I would do), concede with your whole team and go to tourney match (play with your tourney teammates, otherwise... to find every single opponent for the waiting tourney team... would be tough).

My personal sorry for being afk, when people pm'ed me on ventrilo to help with finding the last team. I lost, so I went to eat, do other things... Somehow didn't think of that.

Tourney page with same problem. I don't know why it happens like that, but I want a fix.

Pacov, if you have any troubles in counting the time of different zones, ask me  I am pretty good at it (when previous 3v3 very long tourney happened, I learned lots of ways how to count/convert it easily in my head).

I want one more rule. Team, which ends in upper brackets and is on light side, must host the game. Otherwise, both teams host... Wait for other to join... then few join another host.... that host crashes... rehosting (two rehosts, because two hosts)... and so on. Or waiting until someone hosts and no one hosts actually. After first match, the team which wins faster, must host the game. As for the team, which gets to the finals without matches vs team which won in some time against another... I think team without any matches (0 time to win) must host first and choose light or darkness. Well just my opinion.

This part I mentioned, but want to be clear. Ask people to join tourney. Some Most people are not aware of it. They think they are too weak to participate, they cannot find teammates. Advertise more... At the final day (tourney day), by sitting in a lobby for ~8 hours I managed to get one person to tourney (Freij87) for sure and maybe, that russian team. It really is tough to persuade them. I doubt that cash tourney will be much different. Do you know how to register McShane, Rawrrr or any other player who probably would participate here and didn't in previous ones? Do you know when to press check in, etc? Yeah, you may not be the team leader, so wouldn't need to do that, but still you need to know how to join the team. If you think to register few minutes before the tourney, you may not be in time. I hope you surprise me and join next one soon...

Next tourney will be after two weeks. Form teams now and register them! Not worth waiting till the last hour.

Pacov, could you write details of next tourney soon? Like how much cash prize for what place, etc? Maybe it would make easier for me to attract more players...

P. S. close to zero emotions, because most of this post would be full of negative ones and I think we have enough of that.

End of quote

Nope.  Most Sunday's I'm not awake by noon though so I haven't wasted time trying to register yet.  However I got up today and stuck around because Jona was telling me two teams might need an alternate, nothing came together though unfortunately.  A lot of people are just lazy which is why this tournament didn't turn out so well.  Personally I start to get sleepy by the time I'm done reading the rules of the original post so I've never even read the registration stuff.  Someone should make a nice little youtube video instead of the huge writeup.

Heh... look for the adjusted 10 second attention span "mcshane" rules in the future.  :)  But if you can be bothered, here's all you need to do to get setup on the jee site.  Takes 6 min tops and then you are set up to quickly enter the next tourney.

Some thoughts on the next tourney:

  1. It is 2v2
  2. It is for a cash prize (I'll decide and announce if we are having a winner take all or 1st and 2nd win some money... leaning towards winner take all, but we see)
  3. DG selection rules undecided (I'm leaning towards the original 2v2 rules I created for our 1st 2v2 tourney, but pretty much undecided)
  4. I'm leaning towards double elimination.
  5. Hard DQs this time.  I'm going to be pretty unforgiving and DQ teams if they don't get their game started within 30 minutes.  If we do end up going double elimination, there won't be much room for folks that want to goof around before getting their game going... just prove to me that your team is ready and other is not and I'll DQ and you move on to the next round.
  6. FIND A TEAM NOW.  I won't be recreated the tournament from scratch this time even if 10 teams are waiting and failed to register.  Find a teammate.  Register.  Fight.
  7. If you are planning on playing, PLAN on being available at the start time and for as long as you are in the tourney.  If you can't commit to about 4-5 hours tops - DO NOT REGISTER.

Last thought - if someone that is somewhat familiar with the jee site and is willing to help me test, let me know.  I'll create a practice tourney to make sure I understand how to set things up properly so there are no screw ups on my end.

I could help to test whatever is needed with tourneys. I actually wanted to play with it a bit myself (to understand the failures, looks of different tourneys, etc), but I think you, Pacov, can do more there (admin), so you might have more options (I didn't want to mess up anything there yet, in case i cannot remove tourneys, etc).

Thanks Dark - I'll get with you sometime over the next couple of days to try something out.  I most likely won't be on tonight, so perhaps I'll catch you tomorrow.
