just a couple of questions

i recently started modding sins, diplomacy, but i have had a couple of wierd problems:

i created a mod that only had one change to the original game and that is that i edited the starbase data file so that it had 20 upgrade points rather than 8. for some odd reason it has completely ruined the starbases though, when i build one it neither has a body nor appears in the sector. if i double click the icon to find it, it takes the screen way off the map but still displays nothing. considering what i change i am at a complete loss for whats gone wrong.

i was also wondering if anyone knew about a good tutorial for adding a fourth race to the game, since i cant find any.

From where did you get the reference/text file? It might be that one which has the problem.

For adding a race, Myfist0 has a sins modding site here. The site have a tutorial for adding a race, though a new race can be a bit big, depending on how unique you want it to be.

Oh and welcome to the Sins modding community ^^

End of sergoba's quote

Ah, that might explain it. The problem with forge tools 3 is that some of the content is... ancient. You can get the newest reference files by clicking download at the top, download under modifications and you will see 3 reference "mods". Download the diplomacy one and you will have all the files as txt files.

Also what did you mean by binary? If you meant the original game folder then that is the wrong place to put it, you can use the placing mods tutorial at the site I linked to in my first post. If you meant that you had converted it to bin, then that isn't necessary to use it, txt files work just as well, though it will affect the performance a little.

No problem, everyone here is friendly towards beginners (and non-beginners) so don't hold back if there is anything you want to ask about.

both myfist0 and myself have uploaded complete sets of texted reference files, AND I also released a utility that can convert a COPY of the entire sins/entrenchment/diplomacy game files between BINary & TeXT modes, and as gruntmaster hinted at, the files in the program files tree should NOT be changed, and all mods SHOULD be placed in the mods folder with the same directory structure as the game

and here is my standard mods location information

assuming you have sins 1.191/entrenchment 1.051/diplomacy 1.01,  the Mods NEED to be placed here for xp

C:\Documents and Settings\'user name'\Local Settings\Application Data\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\Mods-v1.191
C:\Documents and Settings\'user name'\Local Settings\Application Data\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\Mods-Entrenchment v1.051
C:\Documents and Settings\'user name'\Local Settings\Application Data\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\Mods-Diplomacy v1.011

or here for vista/windows 7
C:\Users\'user name'\AppData\Local\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\Mods-v1.191
C:\Users\'user name'\AppData\Local\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\Mods-Entrenchment v1.051
C:\Users\'user name'\AppData\Local\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\Mods-Diplomacy v1.011

NOTE the first two folders after the 'user name' are hidden , so to see them you must first click on 'tools' then 'folder options', then 'view', then click on 'show hidden files& folders' then click ok, then you will be able to browse your want to the folder. I suggest when you find the folder that you create a shortcut to it on the desktop

NOTE 2 the 'user name' in the above paths is your WINDOWS login user name, eg Administrator

and if the mod you want to use is from an EARLIER sins/entrenchment version place the mod in the mods folder FOR THAT version eg mods-entrenchment v1.03, then download and run my mods updater from the latest version archive which will have the same number as the vanilla sins version number, and AFTER updating the mod(s) to the current version for any mods of pre 1.04 entrenchment ALSO run the manifest maker on ENTITY manifests on EACH of the mods EXCEPT for total conversion mods

hope this helps
