SoaSE Trinity fails to start

Clicking directly on vanilla, ent, and dip executables results in no process appearing in task manager. I can run dip dev SOMETIMES, and when it works I get this error:

Assert @ c:\projects\Perforce\SinsDiplomacy\main\CodeSource\Engine/Core/Settings.cpp(659)

!attemptToReadLegacySettings || (attemptToReadLegacySettings && versionNumberFromFile >= ConvertToReleaseSpecificVersionNumber(184))

Vanilla stand-alone sins was installed at one point. Uninstaller was ran and completed normally.

What do? Haven't received box yet. The install was verified in Impulse and game was updated. As I said the dip dev works sometimes. I either get nothing (just like with the non-dev executables), it just dumps that error and breaks regardless of which button I push, or rarely it will start up fine (although I've never bothered to play it when it worked). Needless to say the launcher doesn't work.

Forum search yielded nothing...

Have you tried un-installing and re downloading from impulse errors can creep in when downloading.

Redownloaded and reinstalled with the same issue still occurring. I do have the latest video drivers and direct x.

EDIT: I got a minidump the last time the dip dev executable worked.

Try clearing out your settings files:

XP:      C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR_USER_NAME\Local Settings\Application Data\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\Setting
Vista/7: C:\Users\YOUR_USER_NAME\AppData\Local\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\Setting

Try deleting or moving the 'user.settings' and 'diplomacy.user.settings' files to a different location, then run the game again.  This will recreate them using the defaults.

I already did that as I saw it suggested in another thread, but I went ahead and gave it another go. Didn't fix anything.

For right now I just load up dip dev when I wanna play, but it isn't always successful and is a pain.

It seems ent dev works as well. Both the devs start in windowed mode so I manually changed the setting files to VideoIsWindowed TRUE, but that did nothing.

Will give it a few more days and if nothing I'll e-mail tech support with my minidump.

Does SoaSE dislike any particular graphics cards?

Part of me wants to say it is my computer specifically, but that's just paranoia because my PSU is starting to break. I wonder about the motherboard too, it's like me: quirky. However, Starcraft II works fine and in general software is fine. How would a PSU screw it up, and if it was a motherboard issue I'd think other software would be effected.

Sorry to hear about your ongoing problem. If you want the Dev.exe to start maximized, create a shortcut, right click and select properties of the shortcut, near the bottom there is a Run: dropdown, select maximized.

I received my physical copy of the game. I uninstalled the downloaded version and reinstalled with my CD. Everything WORKED. I started up Diplomacy three times and every time the executable worked (although I did receive minidumps when exiting the game). Then I opened up Impulse and updated the game and now it isn't working anymore.

Thus it is the latest patch that is screwing everything up. Anyone have any ideas? I could play it without updating but that's lame -- not only will I miss out on the fixes and balances, but I also have to remake all of my GameInfo files for the old version. Pain in the butt! ;)

Looking at the Event Viewer I found an error message in regards to SoaSE which pointed to ntdll.dll. After doing some research I found a fix which made Sins work, that being disabling DEP for explorer.exe

I have to be curious as to why my game worked when it was installed from the DVD and not updated, but for now everything seems ok. If the situation changes or I find out more information I will post it in this thread in case any other users have a similar problem in the future. There are numerous fixes for the ntdll issue, and disabling DEP was just the one that worked for me.

I've only ran the normal executable for diplomacy twice (I'm playing right now actually =P) so I won't yet be updating the support ticket I turned in (the very first time I installed from Impulse it did work for a couple days, so maybe I'm encountering a fluke or coincidence and it may stop working again). I'll wait two or three days and start up Sins numerous times before I add a reply to the ticket, just in case. ;)

Necro bump.

I uninstalled Sins a long time ago and reinstalled tonight. Now this SAME problem is occurring and the old fix I used isn't working anymore.

For the love of god, tell me this problem has been figured out by now? Everything is the same. =\
