Pacov's Replay Commentary Number 1

I'm trying to get some practice for the upcoming tournament at providing commentary for replays.  Here is my first attempt.  Feedback appreciated.  I didn't choose the world's most stellar game, but one that was familiar to me and I broke down the action quite a bit... maybe too much.  Anyway, appreciate any criticisms - what did you like?  what was crap?  etc.  Thanks!

I liked it, you do good voiceover work.

Slowing it down and giving a build order/kit update was a nice touch.

Only thing I didn't like was calling everyone by name was confusing.  A start of the game intro is great, but once the game starts maybe you could have just started to refer to a player as lets say "Dark Rook" instead of by name.  Then again, my chick says I don't remember things good, so maybe that would just be me getting confused.

And maybe you could consider yelling "GAAANNNNK!!!" every time theres a kill to liven things up.

I don't know offhand how to fix this for you, but your video isn't maxed out on youtube, making it a little harder to see.  I think that's a problem from when you compressed it and didn't have the correct settings to get the correct resolution or something.

Also, max length is 15 min for a non premium youtube account.. don't know why you only had the 3 minute pt 1, but it could have all been done in 2 parts :)

As for the actual commentary, I liked the pausing for showing the opening and talking about what they are doing.. it allows you time to mention things that need to be mentioned, but not miss an early gank 30 seconds in.  Also, I liked seeing the observer view point, but at the same time, it's nice to see ability / hp / mana bars for someone.  You don't get to see the whole view, but w/e.

I don't know when it started, but I definitely noticed in part 3, your audio is ~5-10 seconds ahead of the video.

I don't like the slow pace.  It wasn't too bad for a quick game, but the longer games.. it just seemed slowed down way too much.  Unless you're doing something like Day9 does for SC2 and giving tips and hints and discussing strategy in-depth, I would rather watch it all at normal speed, occasionally pausing or slowing down if you want to look at item / build orders / cit upgrades / w/e.

Ummm... what do you mean by maxed out Nana?  I watched it in HD on fullscreen mode.

Edit: Oh sorry, the black box effect.  Didn't notice it when I watched, my bad.

That was a problem with how it was edited.  The source videos are actually in 2 parts (a 3 min piece and another piece).  When I tried to join those 2 to form 1 big movie, the 2nd file would never play correctly (audio, but no video).  So, I finally was like, screw it, and put it up in the 3 parts as I could split the 2nd file.  Soooo, that's why there are 3 files of silly durations.

Yeah - i threw the source video into windows movie maker initially to get the compression sorted, but had a little bit of a fail.  What you see on youtube is my best attempt, sadly :)

Slowing it down and giving a build order/kit update was a nice touch.

Thanks!  Glad you liked that.

You might have a fair point - that might make it easier for folks to follow.

Yeah - I'm leaning that way a little bit as well.  I'm thinking the ideal setup would be the provide an intro covering the players in the game, normal speed "live" commentary, and then a breakdown at the end of the game where key parts of the game are slowed down (though it might be better to actually do the breakdowns as they happen in game.  I'd just edit in the break downs and then jump back to the "live" replay.

Thanks for the feedback, guys.  Much appreciated if anyone would take a look and let me know what you think.

Watched it last night. Interesting enough that I turned the Pats-Dolphins game down, which tells you something. Also made me think that you could do what the NFL does (kinda). Start the game at normal speed and then when someone makes an interesting play, First Blood, first tower down, gank, teammate save or something, you can slow down and take a look at where they are with build/ kit at that point. If a Rook goes towers/shoulders/roll and stands in his farm all game, no one who is a big enough fan to actually watch a replay really needs any insight into that.

The NFL doesn't expect you to sit through all 4 rosters in a row, people would change the channel. (Not that that is what you did.) But just focusing on players when they actually contribute to the outcome of the game might be more interesting. And then when your guy that drew First Blood gets a Double-Smite later, you can check back in and see how he's progressed.

I hate the NFL because of that, too many interrupts and too slow paced. I'm more a soccer guy of the World cup where so much stuff happens at once and the commentator just has to go with the pace :D

You should do replays when something interesting happens.

eg: Normal Commentary -> Something technical and important/interesting happens -> Replay in slow mo, and explain what is happening and what people were thinking in greater detail. (might even ask the players what they were thinking). This way you can point go back and change the camera angle after the play has been made and show it in more detail. Kinda like real sports. (showing the whole field of play, and then zoning in on the things you need to pay attention to afterwords for the replay, when the audience now knows what happened but wants to see/learn why)

Infact, that might be the only thing missing, interviews with the players for their input on what they were thinking :)

Also, for the tournament, you should consider a "highlights" reel of the week when showing off scores. Both the blunders and exceptionally well executed moves...

Good thought.  Thanks for the feedback so far fellas.  I think a highlight real might be pretty cool and we could put something like that together on a weekly basis, but I'd need people to watch their replays and submit a few specific times that they'd like broken down for highlights.  There's pretty much no way I could go through all of the replays for a single week and make a vid.  This first video (granted, it was a learning process), took like 4-8 to create/encoded/upload and its not even all that stellar.

I REALLY wish there was a way to rewind games.  That would make this MUCH easier.
