Pacov's Replay Request

Pacov's Replay Request

Hey guys.  In our upcoming tournament (http://forums.demigodthegame.com/396231), we will be looking into providing some live commentary along with streaming video of the replays.  Currently, rawrrr and I will providing some commentary.  Anyway, I'd like to get some practice in.  Does anyone have any high quality games that are somewhat exciting that we could get a link to the replay of?  Obviously, it must be for the current version of demigod.  Anyway, a little practice commentary will go some distance in getting folks interested imo, and will likely motivate us to provide commentary for more and more games in the tourney.  Please be thoughtful of any replays you might submit as I only have so much time to dedicate to this.  The more balanced the game, the more impressive the replays will be imo.  Anyway, if you have anything, please provide a link here and give me a little info as to why you think the game was exciting.  Thanks!

Yeah this was probably the last good game I played in. A few miss communications turned the game around.
should have gotten mageslayer at some point. it was unnecesarry to stack so much more of the other hp items with your no spit ub. at one point you're like just hitting and hitting you still have half life and a sigil but you realize you cannot kill anyone and walk away.  Plus your enhanced attack speed with mage slayer would have been brutal. Just in this case and this case only ooze beast would come ahead spit beast because late late late game spells become worthless and it's all about physical damage.
End of GM-Zen_God's quote

Me not getting mageslayer had nothing to do with the loss. If I remember right I think we lost their portal twice? Once because we wanted to kill Rawrrr so bad that we let mcshane get the portal and didn't even kill rawrrrr. I think that was the biggest fail of the game.

yeah it was, but still after that you kept stacking hp and soccermom sat on 10k gold when you guys finally lost your portal.

ya... like I said, I did a whole commentary of it.. but lost it >.<  Haven't started another due to schoolwork, and then I have military duty all fri-sunday, and then a bit more schoolwork.  Soo.. I should have a commentary up next weekish so people can see what it might be like and if it's good / bad.

My comments from the game:  Soccer got some clutch interrupts with penitence on my shamblers and mulch w/e.  Two resulted in a kill, another resulted in a sigil that I shouldn't have had to use.  Ridiculous that he interrupted a .5 sec cast more than once, and a .1 sec cast for mulch in the same game.

QoT power isn't entirely shown in this game, but taking the full damage of beast and oak + pen and spirits long enough that mcshane was able to turn fully capped flag over to us was pretty awesome.

Cow missed at least 3 kills because he used his grasp as damage and didn't save it for an interrupt, allowing a port out from an otherwise sure kill.  Also, I died once because I didn't port out when both stuns were on cd.

They lost the portal the first time because mcshane drew a double port to defend one of their portals, then he ran out, ported down, and reclaimed our portal.

Cow kept trying to run around after we reacquired our portal for the 2nd time, attempting to use j-treads (coupled w/ innerbeast) to force a port to one portal, then running over to the other.  I highlighted that it was completely ineffective, as I was able to run to the other portal with enough time to prevent it from turning yellow even without any speed items.

But of course, none of my awesome comments were included because fucking fraps deleted the 3 gb file shortly after creation.  boo.

I think I'm going to try and find a shorter replay that I've saved and use that.  A 48 minute replay isn't really the best to test the waters with.

Another nice program is one called handbrake for converting those frapps files into mp4 and making them a smaller size.  I use it to make videos for my iphone once in a while.  I imagine a 3 gig replay would take a good 2 hours or more to convert though.  Handbrake's a free download, should just be able to google it.

I took some time and made some commentary on a meh game with me and a few pugs vs pugs.  We'll see if I get around to compiling it and posting it soon.  I think my ideas will help spur you more creative folk on to making better ones.  I DREAM of getting something posted by the end of next week.  At any rate, it was just an 11 min game, so I found it much easier to compile.  Good testing ground.  Will have to try out fraps and see if I dig the quality any more.

I'm kind of excited about this.  I feel like I might be doing the replays a little too slow.  In demigod, nothing important can happen for a few minutes, but then everything goes crazy (in the game I reviewed, there was a kill at 1:05, 1:39, 3:05, 3:13, 3:30, 4:14, 6:22... and quite a bit more).  I found myself slowing things down ALOT to cover all of the action and trying to zoom in, etc.  Anyway, its ok a for a first attempt imo.  It takes quite a bit of time to provide decent commentary on a replay (I spent 3 hours and am not done on a 13 min game).

Anyway, here were my steps:

1st time setup - find something to record games - testing in xfire - xfire does great at low rez and a little chop at high.  After testing all settings, I chose to go with low rez.  Then you have to configure your mic, find the hot keys, etc, and then you can record your first game.

After first time setup, here's what I had to do:

  • Watch the replay and mark the times of interesting events.  I simply counted any kills so I knew the exact time I'd want to slow down.
  • Pay attention to other noteworthy things.  Is a reg spamming a specific player with snipe (is that good/dumb?), etc
  • Grab the stats of all of the players involved in the game (I choose who they picked, current rank (today) and win %).  That gives a decent idea of the skill level.
  • Create a screen to open with that shows those players stats (see screen below)... I just setup this up quick in paint - which has no way to align the text exactly.
  • Then, start recording.  I initially missed a few spots I needed to slow down as I was blabbing away about this and that
  • If you screw up and miss positioning the camera on an important point, just stop.  End the replay, FF to whereever you need to be, then record again.  You can edit it

Remaining steps before I publish this poo:

  • Add a voice over to my title page (shown below)
  • Edit the final version of the video to cut out any overlapping crap (where I stopped and restarted)
  • Edit dumb ass audio where I sound like a tardo (I probably won't do this)
  • Compile and compress the final version
  • Upload somewhere

Cool stuff to do:  If we could come up with a simple intro that we call could use, that would be great.  Think like a 15 second opener to all of our commentary set to good music, etc.

And there you have it.

I think that looks great pacov. However I wouldn't want to give away the length of the game, plus I prefer you commentating on a game you haven't seen before. To fill in words in the beginning talk about the game, events, players, strategies, and about the single demigods. basic stuff is always interesting for new to average players :)

man i'm so excited about the replay commentaries! I hope it works out well! And we can post them in an orderly fashion on youtube as well! That will advertise the game so much and revive the game. The reason I bought the game was because I saw a replay on youtube from frogboy playing fire tb with his teamspeak voice , and thought this game looks awesome !

bah.. rendering failed due to lack of memory or something last night.  Restarted my comp and cleaned up some shit.. cpu running much lower.  Hopefully I'll get the rendering done today.

When you say rendering - are you are talking about compressing the video or what exactly?  I was thinking about trying fraps to compare quality, etc, but I'm curious when you crashed.

Yeah - that's cool stuff.  I really like some of the sc2 commentaries, but those are typically done with 2 people - I'm not sure how we could pull that off though with a replay.  I know we could live broadcast a game, but not sure about recording it at the same time... if you could have the commentary recorded along with it... lots of stuff to sort out.

actually a lot of the sc2 commentary is done with 1 person, although live commentary is usually done with 2.

I crashed when running Sony Vegas 9.0.  Basically this takes the huge fraps files and allows you to edit the video / audio and then compress it down.  For some reason youtube doesn't like 20 gb files ;)  Oh well, 1st 15 minute chunk is 1/2 done.  Hopinnngg it finishes w/out a problem and I can figure out the last stage of uploading to youtube.  After this it shouldn't be hard to streamline the process.. but srsly.. still using significant resources to render, which is apparently not out of the ordinary.  I think I was just running too much before, and while my comp can handle quite a bit, it's never encountered this :/

Edit:  oh.. they don't do it very often like I said, but when they do use 2 ppl to do a replay, they both coordinate when to start the replay on vent and go from there.  Communicating over vent, and hoping that they started at near identical times so one person isn't commentating 5-10 seconds later or something (which has happened in a couple of the replays I've seen done this way).

Gotcha - I figured it must have been using a separate program outside of fraps, but didn't know for sure... I'd really rather not record any commentary and video and have the vid capture crash out on me and corrupt the video... glad to hear that's not the case.

There's a little bit of a limitation I bumped into using xfire.  When recording and doing commentary, you appear to have exactly 2 choices.  You can either record the in game sounds or record your commentary.  Obviously, I chose the latter, but I'm not all that excited about dropping the in game sound to nothing. Is this a constraint in fraps, rawrrr?  Can you record both yourself and the in game audio - or do you have to pick 1 or the other?

you can pick one or the other, or both.  It also just records mic audio without having to hold down a key.  Sony Vegas just finished.. compressed the first 15 minutes down to 400 mb.  YouTube allows 15 minutes and 2 gb.. so I don't see a problem using fullsize to get hd quality in future replays.  Uploading now and rendering the next part.  Should hopefully have the whole replay up in .. oh ffs my upload speed is so fucking slow.  Hooray estimated 1.5 hours to upload 400 mb.  I never really expected to upload a whole bunch when I got this package.. just download lol.  Oh well.. it willlll get up today, I have this shit on lock down.

Edit:  Eh.. I did get game sounds in.. but I didn't have the volume up as much as I should have.  You can hear it in the replay.. just.. not very loud at all.  I'd load dg to see what my settings were for it.. but I don't really want to fuck with the rendering by utilizing too much of my pc lol.  Currently just listening to music and browsing the web and I'm still a little scared.

There  should be definitely the sounds and music of demigod in the background. It adds to the intensity and atmosphere of the game. Maybe record sound/voice with a different program if it gives to much trouble?

nah it didn't give too much trouble.. just realized after I finished that game sound was a little low.  It's present.. just low.  I'll get it fixed in the next one.  As it is, part 1 is finished!  Part 2 should take another 2 hours, and part 3 should be like 30 minutes.  Ideally.  In the meantime, I'm looking for another replay in my list of saves.

yeah - its just an xfire thing.  I'll keep my first commentary as is without the in game sounds and you can tell me if it detracts from the commentary or nah.  Either way, if fraps can capture the game sound and the commentary, I'll be using that going forward.

feedback appreciated.  Also, I have about 12 decent replays saved.  Looking for feedback on which one to try another replay on next week.  All include me playing qot >.>

reg / sed / qot vs ere / oak / reg - all on vent (except the sed on my team)

Rook / Sed / QoT vs Ere / UB / Reg - Mostly pugs.. wip is reg.  Very.. unusual game.  Hilarious tho.

QoT / Reg vs Oak / TB - Me, Defender, Soccer, Teseer respectively

QoT / UB vs UB / Occ - 4Nana, 1Nana vs Red-One, Green-One

Those are probably the highlights.. don't know what people want to see tho.  Halp!

do the one we just played this night. Probably way more high skilled than most of the games ever played

No! I played horrible that game zen:)

hey - good job on the replay.  My commentary is pretty similar, but I slow things down and show multiple angles... I'll try to get this setup soon.

oh shit - my favorite comment is - "they could pull 6 kills out of their ass"  lolz.

funny shit.  :)

also "zen_god - lost to him because of some bullshit" in the demigod 2v2 tournament.  Hah.  Full of fun.  Good job rawrrr!

Hey - keep looking for good games for reviews.  We still have some time before the tourney starts up.

I'm compiling my first commentary now and going to sleep.  I used xfire and am compiling in adobe premier.  I also noticed that I'm missing 1 whole minute from the game (lost a video somewhere on along the line).  At any rate, its a good test to get ready for our tourney.  If things work out ok, I'll be posting that tomorrow at some point on youtube.  Please check it out.  I think we might find that a good balance between the way rawrrr did things and how I did things will make for a good commentary system.

On my wish list - I would love for someone to throw together some sort of common intro for us to use at the start of our matches.  I think I had a good idea showing the win % and ladder rank of folks (but I won't be implementing the commentary I wanted for this one over that title page (where I show the win % - I wanted to talk through each players playstyle and so on).  Anyway, the overall game I picked it just a scrub, somewhat low level game, but I think I had quite a few good points, especially with my slowing down and zooming in on some of that action points.

also - hey rawrrr - how did you upload?  Did your editing program handle that for you?  Does youtube has some crap built in?  The easier I can upload this, the more likely I'll get things posted tomorrow.  Thanks!
