GalCiv2 - Twilight incompatible with Win 7 64 Bit?!?

I didn't play GalCiv2 for years and so I decided to give it a try with both expansions. I installed the gold edition via CD and then downloaded the Twilight expansion via Impulse. Unfortunately Impulse didn't detect the GC2 and dark avatar installations and I found a hint that the registry data might be messed up. That was indeed the case (BTW, why wasn't it patched when it was a know problem?!?) and I made some fixes to get Impulse to find the GalCiv2 and Dark Avatar installations. I was then able to download the patches in a 12 h download marathon because of my slow internet connection.

According to Impulse, everything is fine now, but if I start TALaunch.exe and click 'Play the Game' I get the error message "Please run setup.exe from your CD or reinstall game.". If I start GC2TwilightOfTheArnor.exe the game starts but then crashes after the Stardock Logo animation.

The sheer amount of bugs I experienced hints for serious compatibilty problems. Therefore, am I correct to assume that the game isn't compatible with Windows 7 64 Bit?!

Please open your debug.err file in notepad, and copy/paste the contents into a post here. This will give us some technical information that can help troubleshoot your problem. The location you'll find the debug.err in varies depending on which game you're playing:

Dread Lords: My Documents\My Games\GalCiv2
Dark Avatar: My Documents\My Games\GC2DarkAvatar
Twilight of the Arnor: My Documents\My Games\GC2TwilightArnor

Older versions may store the debug directly in the location the game is installed at.

Be sure to copy the debug immediately after the error occurs; if you start the game again, the debug will be erased and recreated for the new session.

I uninstalled everything and then tried to install everything via Impulse download. This finally worked.

I first had empty buttons, but a restart solved this problem. The fonts were probably not loaded.

Looks like Impulse can't cooperate with the disk versions too well...

The GC2Gold disc installer is very old and doesn't provide the necessary registry entries for Impulse to properly detect it. Newer retail installs (Ultimate and such) should detect and work fine.
