Fighters That Dogfight

Is it possible?

With diplomacy's release I'll most likely come back to playing SoASE, as that was the one element I felt the game was missing. This also brings my question with making a mod:

One feature I never did like was how fast fighters went. To me it seemed "unrealistic" as far as the game mechanics were concerned. Has anyone dabbled in making the fighters move slower? What sort of effect does this then have on how fighters end up against other fighters and/or larger ships?

AFAIK no one has made the fighters go slower.

However, if you don't like them always pinwheeling around the gravity well, then you can set them to hold position stance, and NEVER TELL THEM TO ATTACK AN ENEMY. Instead, move them up close to an enemy.

Why? They will automatically attack the enemy, but the will simply sit in the air, NOT MOVING. This has several benefits- better focusing of firepower onto enemy targets (only you can't really tell it what targets to focus on), and taking less damage from flak frigs.

The downside is that it is very micromanagement intensive, and you have no control over what units are attacked. It is quite effective though.

Every ship in the game has the following lines in their entity file: (with the numbers being variable, of course)

mass 50.000000
maxAccelerationLinear 250.000000
maxAccelerationStrafe 100.000000
maxDecelerationLinear 1000.000000
maxAccelerationAngular 49.999992
maxDecelerationAngular 99.999985
maxSpeedLinear 3500.000000
maxRollRate 2.000000
maxRollAngle 35.000000

Changing these will change the speed.  The primary one you wanna worry about is the maxSpeedLinear if you just want them to fly around slower.
