What's the deal with exploring

Why don't your ships avoid attacking when you are trying to explore FOW areas. you try to explore the map and the next thing you know you have just declare war for no reason other than the stupid ships will not maneuver around a ship or planet. Please don't give me any B.S. about "sector Sweep" all that does is keep a ship circling in a sector.

There is an old autopilot bug. It has been solved as far as I know in the newer versions of 1.04 on up, but it is a minor issue in 1.035A. Maybe that explains it.

The more irritating one for me is the autopilot autoattack during war where the autopiloted ship will attack any enemies in its path.

Would be good if we could get a prompt asking for authorisation to attack when enemies are engaged during autopilot.

I started the game ver. 1.03 then updated to 1.04. Maybe It doesn't work if you started with an older version.

Ray, that reminds me of when I was moving a battleaxe
to a planet I had captured on the front line.

In route the battleAXE _attacked_ a battleship.

The planet on the front line remained undefended :)

In those cases I think it's legal to save and reload.

Perhaps, if you think a single battleaxe is worth
3 races demanding 1200 tribute or else war and instant
building a few wonders too boot.

I just absorbed the loss, game is easier if you play
it straight through, unless you really abuse save/reload.

When it happened to me I had just traded with AI. Next thing I know I am now at war with them for no good reason, except that game can't maneuver ships on auto-pilot.

Hmm, for me the ships just go around.

The ships go round ships of peaceful races but attack enemy ones in war. I've lost count of small fighters that I use as scouts in war who decided to sacrifice themselves against capital ships.

I wasn't at war though. It was fairly early in the game. There was a lot dark area (area not explored) and I just clicked in the dark area to explore it. The next turn the screen voting for war comes up. Their was nothing I could do. The first time I didn't even know why it came up. My ships go around in the explored part of the map.

Yep, that one is really annoying: Had a frigate on my way... three sectors to cross to target planet... auotpilot - meet heavy upgraded starbase... no frigate.
To prevent this, I usually don't use the autopilot in times of war = lot's of micromanagement.

I always get a dialog saying "are you sure you want to attack, this will put us at war with so and so"

Might be an option to have this dialog pop up. Check the options (I would but I'm at work).

I don't see it as an option. Maybe I clicked or hit enter without paying attention to the pop-up. I do remember a pop-up when I wanted to declare war.
