so... a new expansion, but three non-compatible versions of the game?

I'm as excited about any of you re: the new Diplomacy expansion, but I am also concearned that it will create three parallel versions of the multiplayer game and none of them will be able to talk to each other, creating a bigger rift in the  MP scene than the binary "Entrenchment/no Entrenchment" reality of now, which I think is tolerable.

Sins Vanilla

Sins Entrenchment

Sins Entrenchment + Diplomacy

How do you think the MP service should adapt to the new expansion fragmenting the game versions?

according to the impulse description the new pack requires both vanilla sins and entrenchment. probably easier to program just one new version and it reduces the rift problem somewhat.

I think that the multiplayer regulars--the people who already have Entrenchment and who play the 5v5 pug matches--will all end up either migrating to Diplomacy or not migrating as a group.  My gut tells me that Diplomacy won't add much to the online multiplayer game, but that's what I said about Entrenchment, too.

well in other games havent they just released a compatablity patch? where you get all the content and can see it you just cant use it.....i suppose that would severly unbalance the game so i guess your getting 3 diffrent games balence 3 diffrent ways

To Eon: It was pointed out in the Diplomacy announcement :-P

Frankly, the multiplayer crowd for this game is tiny anyway, I don't think Diplomacy will affect it. All of you who are MP-Whores (you know who you are) will cave in and buy Dimplomacy and all will be well. As for the other 80% of the people listed as online and playing games on ICO... those people are usually friends and what not who don't pug much anyway, and they will keep doing their own thing w/ whatever versions they like.

In short... Nah, it wont make it worse, it will stay about the same, or it might even generate a few new MPlayers. But it certainly won't make things worse.
