so i went to create an ICO account, only to realize that i needed the cd key. sounds simple enough, but i dont have the manual. its packed away, somewhere in my attic (i'm moving soon). does anyone know where else i can find the key?
Under your start menu, Programs > Stardock Games > Sins of A Solar Empire > Sins Launcher. Then click on the button for serial number. That should be your CD key. (At least, that's what I used.)
this would do. just takes a lot of time of exploring your pc!. 
The key is in the manual? i didn't know that, i found my key in the inside of the case when i opened it... but then again i got the collector's edition from ebay.
on the back of the manual. thats where it is for most games i think

open your impulse program
when impulse screen is open click with the RIGHTHAND mouse button on your sins of a solar empire
a list of items will open up
click on 'view registration'
your sins registration key will appear in a box

You don't need a CD key to download impulse. I know this for a fact, because I downloaded impulse before I downloaded Sins. https://www.stardock.com/downloads/ Click on the button that says impulse, it'll bring the DL up.
Impulse does not require a cd key to install. Download from the full installer found here: http://www.impulsedriven.com/impulse_setup_full.exe
