Google the topic: http://portforward.com/
Anybody else?
(i am very capable of googling)
the info on those help websites is massive and uses so many acronymes it would take weeks for me to sift through and figure out what i need to do, all the while i feel like im trying to learn a new language.
I am currently trying to set up a static ip address however i dont know what to use for my 'alternate DNS server'. Im not going to chance messing my connection or pc up to where i cant browse the internet. I cant logon to my routers web interface...rrrrrr
this has to be the most frustating thing ive ever done. and i HATE portforward.com it only confuses me more.
Someone plz help...
thankyou
If you can't log into your router interface there is no way you're ever gonna succeed in forwarding any ports, because most likely your router is blocking those. And what exactly is the problem with portforward.com? Used it myself back when I was new to that stuff. You can just search for your specific router AND game and it will literally show you pictures of how to do that, step by step. So either you're being more detailled on what exactly is going wrong at the moment or noone here will be able to help you.
As for the DNS server: that's just the IP of a server that translates URLs to IPs, e.g. www.google.de -> 72.14.221.147. For that you can take either those of your provider (probably listed on his homepage) or some public ones (again, google will help you out there).
Have you tried activating Alloy within ICO? If you activate Alloy you shouldn't need to port forward to join or host games.
That will tell you the IP of your current DNS server [which is most likely your ISPs DNS]- The only reason you'd need an alternate is if your ISP has two [for redundancy] or you have a DNS for your domain/lan.
As for the static address part, most internetwork addresses are dynamically assigned from a pool [DHCP]. Unless you've specifically requested a static address from your ISP, it's probably not static.... However, if you still want people to be able to connect to your IP address via domain name resolution you can configure an account at dyndns.org... The specifics of which, Im not going to go into here-- but is easy enough to do.
The actual process of forwarding the ports is going to vary from model to model of router, however- the overview involves logging into the router's web-gui, selecting the "Port Forwarding"/"NAT & QoS" tab and filling in fields appropriately...
ie- My entry for Ironclad Online[ICO]:
Application Port From Protocol Port To IP Address
ICO 6000 TCP/UDP 6113 192.168.1.101
I've never seen a router web-gui that didn't have a port-forwarding option that looked somewhat similar to that... The location of it, and ease of configuration my vary- but that is the jist of it. Let me know if you have more problems.

What does Alloy do anyways? Just a uPnP service?
