5 hour 2v2 1.16 replay

For all the times people say a Sins game is usually over in 45-60 minutes, I would like to present to you flip side of the coin -- just how long a Sins game can go when neither side can achieve a decisive advantage over the other.  I was only intending to play for an hour or two, and pretty much had to write off the whole morning because I didn't want to throw in the towel on this game.  =)

This game is also a prime example of what happens when your ally is not a noob, but a clueless noob.  Hedgehog and I both headed seperate teams with a new player as our ally.  While Hedgehogs ally was arguably making some poor strategic moves, he at least understood the basics, was threatening my border and even built phase inhibitors on his border world.  My ally was not new to multiplayer -- he was new to the game!! -- he did not upgrade his civilian infrastructure and proceeded to go down like a ceramic goldfish.

Hats off to Hedgehog for buying time for his ally to recover as well as managing to recover himself from losing his HW.  He did a good job.

If you want to see what happened, here is the replay:

Are there any spots to jump to in the video where you or your opponent did amazing stuff?  I'd download it simply to learn but 5 hours is a lot to parse through;)

No, there is not really one spot with especially amazing gameplay.  It was pretty consistent instensity for 5 hours.  If there had been a spot of exceptional gameplay, the game probably would have been over in less than 2 hours.

One thing that really puzzled me:

You didn't buy the second tier of phase missile upgrades until about hour 3 (which in a normal game would essentially mean never). Even more puzzling, you researched the ability to create Overseers MUCH earlier than this, but only bought a handful (if even that) of the unit. To me, it would seem like the phase upgrade would be much more valuable as it affects the units used the most throughout the game (assailant, fighter, bomber, skirantra, kortul).

Is there some sort of cost/benefit ratio I'm not aware of?

I should have bought the next phase missile upgrades much sooner, that was a mistake on my part -- my focus was constantly being pulled to where I was being attacked or raided, or my current fight, or trying to chase down Hedgehog's raiding fleet, and I didn't have much time to think about research.  You think you would have time to relax in a 5 hour game, but I was pretty much constantly under pressure because I was fighting two people.  I actually remember thinking "dangit, forgot to get this" when I noticed I had not yet gotten the next level of upgrades.

I also wanted to get some more Overseers going, but they were the first to die everytime I fought Hedgehog.  I just didn't have the resources to get an army of them, they are much more expensive than Hoshiko's.  I was in very short supply of crystal through the whole game, I was constantly selling metal and buying crystal just to make more ships and rebuild buildings that had gotten raided, which also is why I was doing less research overall.  By end game I was pretty much buying crystal for phase gates and to fuel RA, which was my last "Ace in the Hole" to try and pull out a win.
