GalCivII issues

My computer died recently.  I built a new one and tried to reinstall GalCivII and Dark Avatar.  The problem is that after reinstalling, I can start the game up, but everytime I try to start a new game, the game crashes as it goes to generate the new game.  Any ideas?

Please open your debug.err file in notepad, and copy/paste the contents into a post here. This will give us some technical information that can help troubleshoot your problem. The location you'll find the debug.err in varies depending on which game you're playing:

Dread Lords: My Documents\My Games\GalCiv2
Dark Avatar: My Documents\My Games\GC2DarkAvatar
Twilight of the Arnor: My Documents\My Games\GC2TwilightArnor

Older versions may store the debug directly in the location the game is installed at.

Be sure to copy the debug immediately after the error occurs; if you start the game again, the debug will be erased and recreated for the new session.

While you're waiting for professional help...

Did you happen to notice whether you could access the Tutorial Movies from the main menu in GalCiv2 Dread Lords? I couldn't and I also had the crash when I tried to create a new game. It turned out to be missing a couple of registry keys as these threads will show:

http://forums.impulsedriven.com/345195

http://forums.impulsedriven.com/338751

Look for the reply that provides the download link for a reg file. Or you can make your own with this text (I'm running Windows XP, don't know if it's the same for Vista):

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Stardock\Drengin.net\GalCiv2]
"Language"="English"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Stardock\Drengin.net\GalCiv2\DarkAvatar]
"Language"="English"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Stardock\Drengin.net\GalCiv2\Twilight]
"Language"="English"

Don't do it if your not comfortable editing the registry. If it were me I'd look in the registry first to see if these language keys are already there. Like I said, it's something to look at while your waiting. I'd love to know if this fixes it for you. This is an old problem and I would have expected a recently download to have been fixed.

Oh, and if you don't yet have Twilight of the Arnor don't bother with the 3rd key shown above.

Thanks for the heads up, that appears to have fixed it.
