Need help guys

I stated this before, but I think I placed it the wrong place! Nonetheless, I have a question - If the dreadnaught is dreaded in battle, how on earth can a pheonix (whose specs are lower than the dread) defeat a dread? I've been noticing that the less powerful ships can defeat ships that are much more powerful! Also - how can one ship defeat an entire fleet of less powerful ships. Example. I had five battle cruiser against a Drengin Dreadnaught, and I lost that battle, and I can't understand that! How can one Dreadnaught stant against five battle cruisers in a firefight - Is this somekind of ballance problem or is it the design of the game? Either way it doesn't hurt my love for the game, but it does make things pretty unrealistic. I wish I knew how to fix little things like this, so I won't be such a bother. Can any one help me understand this, and if it's not meant to be the design of the game - is there anything I can do about it?

I'm a bit surprised that a phoenix took out a dread (it can do good damage, but on the defensive side...), although it's quite possible with a lot of military bonuses and some good die rolls.

As for the 5 BCs on 1 DN, that's not surprising at all because GalCiv doesn't actually do "fleet" combat, it does a lot of one-on-one combats, and you would need some insane military bonuses for a Battle Cruiser to hold a candle to a Dreadnaught.

Well, I don't know about Galactic Civ, but I think it's entirely possible, all of the things you said.

Logically, a fleet of as many ships as you can think could get defeated by a single huge ship. Just take Babylon 5 where Sherridan blew up a Minbari cruiser with a destroyer by using his wits not by sheer gun/armor/shield power.

And also, technology can make a huge difference. Like no matter how many smaller ships you have, if your weapons do not even dent the shields of the enemy ships, then you'll get massacred.

And it is still possible to blow up or disable a better equipped bigger ship. The best example for this is the Death Star in Star Wars, a big bertha, and they blew it up using fighters not battleships, by exploiting the weak point of that ship. So same goes for that pheonix of yours, just assume it found the weak point of your dreadnought desing... hmmm, here's something nice to add to this game, each design would include weak points, once your enemy finds that weak point he would know how to blow them up easily or at least disable them in a battle. (Is it possible for a ship to be disabled by normal fire (not special weapons)? if not, why? It's totally logical, since most ships in a battle are either disabled or drifting wrecks that people are abandoning. Totally salvageable.)

I truly think it's totally possible that these kind of things happens, if you use your logic that is hehe.

You guy are probably right, but for this to happen all the time, I don't think so, and besides - we were basically equal in tech - I still don't see that it should be possible! Further more - Five battle Cruiser against one Dread should make the dread sweat even if it does come out on top - unless they are much more advanced! As far as the pheonix goes, that's got me stump! As good as this game is - I guess it makes me look for those things that make me say "OH NO!" and not "What - that's not right!" Well - maybe the extension will take care of some of this and make the game a Little more realistic. After all - the drengins weren't a hundred years over me - we were basically equal, and I was putting them out as fast
(well almost) as the ai was! Maybe its just me guys! Greywolf - I agree about the weak spot thing - but come on - how long is the weak spot gonna stay weak? surely if they can find it - my empire should be able remedy that during the course of the war. You can't win a war by finding a ships weak spot - the nation (if not destroyed) will surely find it and solve the problem with that particular design of ship! How does a pheonix get 178 hp! I noticed that the ships in this game gets a little harder to destroy - they gain hit points through battles, but 178hp to 75hp- every dread I sent against it was destroyed. It was the first pheonix in the game, and that kind of up-set me and I shut the game down - I did that until I could cool a little and went back to it. Finally I destroyed it - but by that time - that's all the drengins were pumping out, and you know what that meant (BY EARTHLING - LOL). I wish this could have took on a little of the old game MAX!

I can shead light on the Phoenix. I know given the right military bonuses, a Phoenix can have some rather scarey ATT values. I've seen their values get well above 30 and some even greater than that. All that being said, a Phoenix can sometimes deal a great deal of hurt in battle.
Edit here... when you get a Phoenix with an extremely high attack values, I've seen them exceed a Dreads defense value to a great degree. And that kind of advantage may be enough to overcome the hitpoint advantages the dreads have.

Dreadnoughts *are* significantly more advanced than Battle Cruisers, which if memory serves are also weaker then Frigates, Battle Hammers, and Battleships. As for the Phoenix hp, it's likely a combination of War Party, tech, and experience.

As to how extreme values can go... on a huge map, I once had Excaliburs with attack slightly greater than 500, some ludicrously high defense, a movement of 25 and hundreds of hp. ;) Short of a few heavily-pumped up antimatter missiles or another pumped-up Excalibur, it was basically unstoppable.

And phoenixes were supposed to have cloaking which is currently not implemented yet. Without cloaking, it is weak relative to other same era ships.

According to my estimates of battle damage and my modelling you would need 30 battle cruisers to take out 1 dreadnaught with equal weapon mods.
