texturing question

I have figured modeling out pretty well from the tutorials and reading, but i have a question. how do you on a single polymesh select and apply a seperate texture to a specific portion of the model? Like the exhaust ports.

If you know the answer and can spare the time i would be grateful.

Thanks,

i dont quite get what your asking as far as texturing goes but there is a handy little tutorial on texturing somewhere around the forums. the pined post Here was so so as far as basic introduction to texturing goes. if memory serves corectly you create your texture itself after you create the normal map, which would give you a basic highlight of all the areas of the mesh. i dont really texture myself so if someone can explain it better, feel free to ignore this :p

You don't. Sins models use a single texture, so you simply have the model UV mapped in such a way which allows you to paint the texture according to specific areas on your ship. In other words, you do not apply separate materials within XSI or other modelling package, you apply a single material with all the textures assigned to it as described in the Forge Tools 3 documentation.

If you don't know how to UV map, well, you gonna have to learn. ;) I suggest googling for UV mapping tutorials for the program you use to get yourself started. It may look complicated, but it really isn't once you learn your way around. Its actually more tedious than difficult (UV mapping is my least favourite part of making a model).

Ah! okay, so you build the UV map and paint it in photoshop. cool. now it makes sense. i was trying to texture in xsi then oh never mind. i think i got it now.
