Newb needs answers

This game is excellent.  Probably one of the best RTS games I've played.  I'm having a little trouble and was hoping I could get some answers from more skilled veterans out there....if you have the time to answer

1.  There's so much to do I don't know what to prioritize.  This goes for pretty much everything in building.  Do I expand first?  Do I move up the tech trees quickly?  Usually I get to expanding quickly.  Generally I just spread everything out while amassing a fleet usually teching my warfare first.  (I play Vasari)

2.  In fleet battles what are the priority ships?  Do you go straight for the capitals or knock of the support ships first?  Usually I knock out the capitals then work my way down

3.  I know it's generally dependant on the games, but is better to turtle and build economics then fleets?  Or always mass up the fleet as quickly as possible.  - The AI in this game is quite complex.  Some games I've simply overrun them and some games I'm amazed at the size of the fleet they bring at me.

4. When building a fleet is it important to grab each prototype possible or can you get away with specializing.  example:  20x heavy frigates 20x defensive cruisers as opposed to 5x every ship type

5. How important is microing in this game?  It seems most everything is autocast.  Best to just leave it that way?  Or will a rightly timed capital ship ability make an impact?

What do most of you like to do?  Which course do you take?  Economics first?  Expansion?  or fleet building?

I'm a Vasario player too, and you will find that they have great firepower and mobility, but are more challenging then the TEC.

Early Game

Don't expand too fast and don't do too much research. It makes you vulnerable to attack and can kill your economy. Upgrade planet infrastructure as soon as you capture a planet.

When you start the game, make 2 or 3 scouts, buy 100 crystal and build a capital ship factory. Make a coloniser capital (jarrusul evacuator, better known as the "Space Egg")

While your scouts are exploring, you have to capture any neutral extractors lying around. This gives you an early game economic boost.

Capture the nearby asteroid, but make sure to kill the neutrals guarding the planet first.

Don't do too much research early game. Get assailants. Spam these early game. You can rush and defend with them. Making more frigates is more cost effective early game, but I usually get hull and phase missile upgrades early game.

Do not turtle. Expand and be aggressive, but don't overdo it. You should ignore tradeports and get refineries about 20 mins. into the game.

Mid Game

Don't look for a fight mid-game. Focus on economy. Expand cautiously. Research carriers, subverters and enforcers. Mid-game you will have a relatively small fleet because Vasari ships are expensive, but tough.

Do not get equal numbers of every ship type. The idea is to get a flexible fleet that counters your opponent's fleet. Get assailants (early-midgame)and carriers, subverters and enforcers(mid-late game) Mix in a few others like sentinels and overseers (mid-late game).

Late Game

Late game, you fleet should be heavy on carriers and enforcers. Subverters are important as well and give them the Distorsion Field upgrade. Overseers also help to keep your own ships alive. Don't upgrade the Overseer's other abilities. You should not have as many support cruisers as other ships.

Phase stabilizer nodes are strategically important. Get them. Build one at each of your border planets. They allow you to phase jump to any other planet in the star system that also has a phase stabiliser. This make it easier to respond to an attack on your empire.

Tips

Fighting carriers and spamming carriers is very important in the latest patch.

When fighting carriers, make carriers yourself. While you are building up a carrier force, make sentinels and skirmishers.

Make 1 sentinel per enemy squadron.

This means you will have 2 to 3 times as many sentinels as you enemy has carriers, but you fleet will still be cheaper.

You should not normally make skirmishers, but make 2 skirmishers per enemy carrier and give them the Interference ability if you are struggling against the enemy carrier spammer.

The Kortul's Jam Weapons is good at level 3 and the Skirantra Carrier's Repair Cloud and Micro-Phasing Aura help you own strikecraft stay alive. Do not bother with bombers. Make only fighters much of the time.

Do not make seige frigates. They are worthless. To take over planets, just get the Space Egg (coloniser capital) and other capitals.

Do not leave abilities on auto-cast. Usually, capital ship abilities should be microed. Microing abilities unlocks their true potential.

For example, you have a capital ship that is getting focus fired. Use the Skirantra's repair cloud to heal that unit and get your Overseers to use Reactive Nanite Armor on that unit to help keep it alive.

Another example. You are being attacked by a huge enemy fleet. Your fleet is nearly as big. Use the Kortul's Volatile Nanites ability on an enemy ship. Once your Vulkoras Desolator is in range of that enemy unit, activate Phase missile swarm. Watch enemy ships go bang.

I hope I haven't given you too much info, but I do hope it was helpfu;

Cheers,

I'm doing this:

1. Expand quickly (also I grab those neutral extractors)

2. Upgrade homeworld

3. Building up the fleet (and researching prototypes and weapon damage)

4. Some economic research and trade ports

5. Rush against someone (meanwhile still researching)

6. Going for that Kostura cannon :dur:

5. How important is microing in this game? It seems most everything is autocast. Best to just leave it that way? Or will a rightly timed capital ship ability make an impact?

It is very important. For example, you don't wanna set the TEC's Marza Missile Barrage to autocast. As a newb (n00b!) I usually WAS setting to autocast and didn't micro, but when I saw that it triggers it to a single ship once, I was like x_x

1.expand quickly.  and I generally tech economy and get trade ports as fast as I can.  It doesnt matter if u get a uber fleet fast when the other guy is getting 5 times the money you are.

2.If I know I can kill the capital ships easy then i go for them 1st.  If not, I take out all of the weaker ships.

3.Again, I uber economics then build an uber fleet.  But I only play multiplayer.

4.I get long range frigs, then carriers, then late in the game heavy frontline cruisers.

5.yes,always micro, and dont put your abilities on autocast.

6.fast expansion and economy go together with fleet.  And always upgrade civilian infrastructure right away on all ur planets when u colonize them.  If you are getting 3 times the money the other guy is getting then you can make ships 3 times faster and it wont matter the size of his fleet he is fucked.

This is good info.  Thanks for replies

On microing, is it ok to leave certain capitol ship abilities on autocast or is it abosolutely essential to micro each one?

Also, I've read that early trade ports are a fast boost, but the first reply says that refineries are the way to go?

Yes, except the 4th ability which is ultimate

2. Upgrade homeworld

WHAT EVER YOU DO DO NOT UPGRADE HW

it is a waste of money and is not that helpful

but DO NOT FORGET you can not lose ships with the vas early game it will kill you so here are some tips

1. when jumping in to planet you want to take send cap ship first

2. when fighting neutral HCs kill them first so they cant kill your assalitates

3. when fighting a human player they will try and kill your assaliates dont let them if on your world make repair bays and keep fleet near them if on enmy world micro waltch your ships health and fall back weak ones (recomendation make repairbays on the nearest of your worlds so you can get them back into the fight)

4. get carriers up asap because if you dont you will be doomed when fighting a carrier spammer but DO NOT SPAM CARRIERS if you do that you will be countered by light frigates

5. to expand upon the other post about subverters they are kamakazi ships they get one freeze of enemy and than they will be microed to death

some other random tipthe vas have an advantage over the advent because vas phase missles so get the phase missle upgrade

Homeworld upgrade depends on the map size.  If it's a small map, don't do it.  If it's medium map, do it if you're not going to rush (as Vasari, you are going to rush).  On a big map, upgrade your homeworld.
