Will Entrenchment Work?

So then - I just played 2 games (as vasari!) with the 1.13 patch and did'nt get on too well, I've played the beta a bit as well - but at the moment I'm just playing normal sins, on normal difficulty!)

Well - put simple, I got the crap beat out of me by the AI (who to be honest played real well!), but the main reason for both my defeats were because my home planet got bombed and taken by the AI while my main fleet was engaged half way across the galaxy.  I know how to play sins, and my homeworld was very well defended by about 9 missiles turrets and 4 hangers equiped with bombers.

So my question is this - will entrenchment work? or will I be looking at more micro-management as a AI fleet just blows a starbase to bits while I'm halfway across the galaxy?  The point is - are you always going to be forced to split your fleet?

Where did I go wrong?

(got to admit though - I was impressed with the AI)

There is potential!

The starbases can be upgraded to a crazy amount of hitpoints (roughly 15,000 off the top of my head, although you must understand they start out weak - around 3000).  And there are mines.  So all the potential is there.

On the flip-side, I played the latest entrenchment version against the AI last night, and I was blowing fully-upgraded starbases to smithereens with a mid-game fleet.  TEC and Advent both get long range anti-structure cruisers which take out starbases.  I had about 5 of those TEC torpedo cruisers, and maybe 50 or so bomber strikecraft, and the 15,000 hp Advent starbase not only went down quickly, it didn't even get a chance to fire back (all my stuff was out of its range).

Don't take anything here as definitive, however.  1) this was against the AI, not a person,  2) the AI had no mines, 3) the  AI had no repair bays, 4) The ai had no fighters or flak.  Also, I can promise you that unit balance is not currently set in stone.  From my impression, unit stats are at this point "place-holders."

Starbases could end up being an expensive joke.  Or, they could end up being something impressive.  Who knows?

If you go in planning to take down a starbase, of course its easy to do with the right tools. But when you are trying to do something else and encounter a starbase unprepared. thats when you crap your pants and run home to change.

the way i see it, starbases at this moment shouldnt be looked at as standalone defense. I played a 2v1 with two friends, (I'm good at this game they're new). Anyway, i helped them out enough so that they each had a fleet the size of mine, and they jumped to my asteroid which had 1 fully upgraded starbase and the entirety of my fleet. They managed to take out my starbase and most of my fleet, but i won the battle and folled them into their territory.

Moral is, starbases need to be supported just like any other unit in the game; but i must say the battle was the most fun, epic battle i've ever had, and this is just wtih each player having about 850 unit points. I've played 5v5s to 2000 unit points, and they werent nearly as fun. Now i just dream about building up starbases and luring enemies to them.

Ps, moral of this story is starbases are a HELL OF A LOT OF FUN.

Interesting - I'd have to admit that I really do like starbases, I just hope when entrenchment is released they can make a starbase last long enough to bring my fleet back from halfway across a map, which is part of my problem now.
