Upgrading Ships

Is there a way to have a govenor or even just a galaxy wide method for upgrading built ships of one type to another type? For example, in my current game I have three defense ships at each of my planets and after getting some new technologies, I would like to upgrade all of these to a newer, better model. Is there a way to do this, or do I have to click upgrade in the management menu for all of these ships (24 in this case)?

When the upgrade screen comes up, just under the picture I think there is a little button that says something like "Upgrade all ships in this class" then gives the number in (). Click on that to do all of them.

The only thing is if you say have 2 or 3 different class of old ship you will still have to find at least one of each and upgrade them to the new class.
