Early Colonization Bug?

This is irritating. In my current game the Drengin are somehow in a system 5 sectors away from their starting location, and the Arceans are 4 away. I know that some races get an additional range increment as a racial bonus, but 4 and 5 sectors? In a colony ship moving at 1? I reached the same sector as aggressively as possible which was only 2 sectors away from my starting world. How does the AI pull off this stunt? It's absurd to even see this on the galactic map since other worlds in between are colonized by other races. If the Drenging could get to this far away system, why not colonize everything in between also? Doesn't make any sense.

Range is based on galaxy size, so 4 and 5 sectors isn't necessarily absurd (though it is certainly annoying, I'll grant you.) Some races also may get a speed bonus.

It's also not a bad tactic to start colonizing from the outside in - that sets your initial borders as far away from you as possible and keeps others from getting footholds to advance into your territory. Of course, this works best if you already know which stars have habitable planets....

This is in a medium galaxy, where I can only colonize one sector away from my current colonies. Even if the AI had a range of 2 sectors, it can't pull this off. Heck, it would take me longer even if I colonized "junk" systems in between, built a colony ship, abandoned the junk colony, and moved on. And how would I know it would be worth the effort 5 sectors away? Seems like something fishy is going on.

Hmmm - I've heard of a "first colony ship unlimited range" bug - this may be it.

Also, the AI already knows it's worth the effort!

Also, message editting is cool! :)

It's most likely the starting colony ship infinite range bug. It is fixed in 1.04.
