Courage versus Soldiering

Can anyone speak to the relative merits of courage versus soldiering? In the beginning, when selecting your bonus abilities there is an option to pick +25% courage which the game says is effective in land battles. It doesn't describe how this is effective though or how the game mechanic works. There is also the option to spend points in soldiering which is pretty straight forward. So, can anyone shed any light on the merits of courage relative to soldiering?

IIRC, Courage is 'defense-only' soldiering.

But the wiki doesn't say anything direct about it and I can't recall the thread where I last saw a numbers-master discuss the ability.

Courage has no effect on land battles- it gets used for ship combat from what debug.err dissections have revealed.  As to what, exactly, that effect is, nobody's quite sure.

Soul Sole and I have been working on this very enigmatic ability this past week.  It appears/comes into play when a weaker ship/fleet is in battle with a stronger opponent.  It may or may not appear in Planetary Invasions.

Since the numbers themselves don't appear in the debug.err, we're having a very hard time determining what it actually does.  Our only hope lies in getting +100 Luck to work in TA (as that way weapons always roll their full value)
