New player questions

Updates and expansions?

Hey guys I got into AoC a while back and a guy in the guild I had played with talked highly of Sings of a Solar Empire. I got the game and honestly at first I was put off of it.

However recently I gave the game another try and really enjoyed it, despite the lack of a single player or a more advanced tactics tutorial to teach you more then moving around the screen, but still I really enjoy the game.

So my question is what updats and expansions are out there that I should be looking at to better improve the game, fix bugs and add more stuff seeing how I am still running the boxed version of the game. Thanks for any replies I might get.

you are joining the community at a good time. There are not only 2 MAJOR patches that fix, and change a lot of important thing, but ALSO an expansion for 10 bux that Is VERY cool and is downloadable now.

As far as strategies I'm sure if you have played online at all you realize that playing against the AI is a totally different animal. This is tru of most games that have an online vs AI option ANYWAY so I dont see why you are suprized by it.

Tutorial wise just look at the achievements. If you have achieved a lot of them then you might be getting CLOSE to understanding what this game will have to offer when you play online, The MOST important tutorial will ALWAYS be the online experience though and you can always find a player who is an effective teacher, and will walk you through some of the different philosophys that constitue a reasonable strategy for advancing in this game.

There are plenty of updates, with the most recent one being 1.12. It has many cool changes - some visual (like improved explosions, higher resolution textures, and new models for strike craft and a few misc things), it has a mini-black market window right on the main UI so you can buy/sell resources and place bounty easier, and of course there are many bug fixes and balance tweaks.

The first mini expansion has just entered public beta yesterday, it adds Starbases, minefields, and more toys. Check out "Entrenchment" previews around the net :) If you're interested, you can get into the beta right now by pre-ordering the expansion, it costs $10.

The patches and the expansion beta are available on Impulse (http://www.impulsedriven.com) For the patches, you just need to register your Sins serial there to download them, and for the expansion beta just pre-order in the store there (there's no boxed version for this one).

Thanks for that, Entrenchment does really look cool. I am not a huge sci-fi guy, aside from Star Wars I tend to stay away from it, but this game really is fun even with only 2 days of playing I really find it to be good. For $10 I might pre-order it. I don't know about the beta, I am not to big of a beta person, but Entrenchment does look like it will add a lot to the game :D

I really have no problem with strategies or playing online. I just was a little sad to see that there was no single player, with the start up cinematics I thought they were setting me up for a epic story campaign only to find out one did not exist. Also I expected the game to be a bit like WC3 where it was all about starting build order, so I expected too a slight tactical tutorial but once you play a few times you really catch on and make up your own styles. I am not sure how well I would do online but so far I play more of the defend and then strike type player.

as in all strategygames that involve production there is ofc a *best* starting buildorder

(thee following takes place in the first 5sec of a game)

build capship factory

sell 100metal

buy planetary infrastrukture upgrade

build crystall extrator

build 2x metal exstraktors

Queue up your capship of choice(first one is free most ppl choose the colonizer cap)

after this some ppl choose to sell their capship factory(takes ahwile until you need it again) some don't. but untill this point the above is done by 99% of all players
