Galciv won't run

I just picked up galciv I ultimate over the weekend for cheap :)  thought it'd be fun to play the old version, and see if it reminds me of the old OS/2 version :).

A little problem though, it doesn't launch.  when I try to run it (either through impulse, through teh start menu or from the command line by running galciv.exe directly) it tries to launch, switches desktop resolutions, then flickers back to the desktop.

This is with Vista x64.  Is there any debugging I can turn on to find out why it's not launching?  There are no errors in the event log.

Did you download it from Impluse ... and the "My Games" page shows it to be "installed"?

Yes, I did...I have a similar problem, I am able to launch the game, but shortly after starting it the game locks up and will go no further.

Same Problem. I got the opening scene to the Alterian Prophecy to run once..then same thing.  I've easily surpoassed the minimum system requirements, so its' not a resource or driver issue.

and here. loads, lets me pick which civilization, etc....loads everything apparently..then locks on the first screen.

Well after a bit of back and forth information gathering with stardocks tech support (nice people, great service) it seems they can not find the problem.  Therefore I will be uninstalling GalCiv I and getting my refund.  I'm sad that I can't play the game, but satisfied with the good customer support.

I accidentally found a work around that may work for others, although not for the OP unfortunately. I don't start impulse first, in fact, I just reboot to clear anything the Impulse might have left hanging around. Just run the galciv from it's shortcut or it's actual game .exe file WITHOUT impulse.  Seems to startup and run just fine. Must be something conflicting with the impulse engine or resources that impulse uses.  I don't use Vista, but I'm thinking perhaps there's a resource that GalCiv can't access?
