Map idea

I know this should technicly be under modding, or something similar, but it is most relevent to multiplayer...

so...

I've seen some sugestions that Iron Clad should make some basic skirmish maps.  No empire Stuff, just start out with some ships, and go fight.

I think, that instead of waiting for IronClad, we should make our own maps. The players will start out with a few planets, and a large fleet. They can try to build an empire (reaserch, and such) But they also have enough ships to start duking it out from the begging.

Simply make the maps, put some mark at the begging of the map like .. "Map Name [skirmish]"

Upload it to some site, and ask people to play.

I know that if I get time, I will try this, but, what does everybody else think?

Sounds like a good idea. Try it out.

I think that people should take the whole economic side of the game out, and see what it is like.  You should only be able to have out a certain number of ships at the same time, and don't need to research first.  This way the players would act more as military commanders, and less as emperors.

Also, if all the prototypes from all the factions were deployable for the players, this would add a HUGE strategy element to the game, using combinations and the like.

If there are any developers reading this, I think that you should focus part of the military expansion on combos.  In other words, ships that work well with each other.  I don't mean simple healing ships--maybe more specific combos that are vulnerable with out each other and stuff.  Obviously you probably have thought of this, but I am just reinforcing the thought if it already exists.

There are already a couple maps that might fit this description. "Balance of Power" starts with multiple ships: HCs, LRFs, Light Frigs, Scouts, and a colony ship.  As well as 2 military labs, and defense structures.  Along with 800 starting crystal!  This small 12 planet map allows a 3 player FFA.

"Quickstrike" starts with light frigates, 1 military lab, several defense structures and a scout.  With one jump, 2 players can meet at the central star to battle unimpeded.

"Pandemonium" allows 4 players to instantly duke it out in the central dead asteroid.

Finally, "Blindside" gives 6 players each 2 upgraded planets to start with.

I hope this helps.  PS. You can easily see what is available for each race by opening each map in single player.

It isn't a bad idea, but we really need auto-download for custom maps to make it feasible.

Ah, thanks for all the feed back.

Unfortunatly, I have decided it really comes down to two things.

1) what Jixra just mentioned. Maps will never take off until we have an auto-download

2) I  have just been distracted by modding, I will not have the time to do this.

Thanks for all your feedback again

I disagree, the economic side is part of what makes this game so deep and involving.

I suggested in another thread that Impulse be used to download optional add-on content such as custom maps and mods. The only concern I have is how the downloads are vetted to ensure no dodgy stuff is uploaded for people to download. Plus the issue of SD opening Impulse to non-commercial 3rd parties... The downloads would also need to show up seperately to regular sins stuff as it is optional...

This thread should have a less generic name, it's not what people will be looking for if they are interested in stuff like this :)

Maybe as a mod/map or even a specific game mode, but in the end you will be taking from the whole, not adding, by removing the strategy part from the game. It is an integrated part of whole the fun.

This has been tried before in a full game format, though, with World In Conflict. The result was the best game that ever has been released for PC, so the idea has some merit.
