What disappoints me the most however, is that Pontius's little disciples don't even want to admit the truth that they are not really playing the game for fun, they are playing the game for the metaverse...which I must admit is also fun but a different thing entirely. Would it kill them to just admit this.....perhaps...but then again its only a few pirates. So I'm sure lil eb has spread the word of our mean spirited words towards him to his fellow pirates and our thread will be deluged by their ilk and I suppose papa pontius will be over soon as well to spout some inane rambling about how his system is completely legit and its not all about metaverse scores...blah blah. Hmm. Yes, it wasn't very wise of some overzealous GROSSers to come along and kick the MWC while it was down, but the intentions were not always mean-spirited. Heck, I personally would never kick a guy while he is down, but I would help him up and then decide whether to shake hands or hit him again.

And it was also unwise to suggest GROSS is an empire full of cheese scorers. So one of us likes the Technician style, but there is probably at least one in every major empire that does it too. But a lot of GROSSers have respectable and even fearsome records. Throw no stones while in a glass house, you know.

Now, I have had nothing but respect for the MWC, never forget that, but I must also remind that every empire, mine, yours and every other one, has its day in the sun. Some are destined to peak at #1 before they fall, others may never reach the big leagues before shrivelling up. The mightiest and the lowliest all fall eventually. The next uber-empire is waiting to be born, where a boatload of active members with the latest, high scoring versions will tear up through the ranks while us old fossil empires get waterlogged with inactive members burdened by the good old days of scores in the low hundreds.

Still stuck on that normal difficulty huh...or is that what Pontius wants you to stay at so you can rack up metaverse points using your pirate cheese. Now now Gerakken, I am not implying that all pirates are cheesy, just the few I call out...I'm sure there are a few righteous pirates among you although that is kinda a catch 22.

Yes I suppose if you play GalCiv to immerse yourslf in a makebelieve world of pirates and wizards and aliens you may have more fun in the GROSS forums. Sometimes when I was a kid, I liked to pretend that I was a pirate too, but then I grew up. I'm simply here to play GalCiv, and chat with my fellow hardworkin Midwestern Confederation members about strategies for the game and maybe real life stuff too?!?! Oh and not to mention that I do so ever love to trashtalk with you "pirates".

So go ahead "The D" pretend you're a pirate come to steal our booty only to realize you're still playin GalCiv at normal difficulty, using someone elses cheese strategy and you really weren''t that big of a loss for us. When you break into crippling come talk and maybe then you'll get a little respect. I have two points to make and I'm going to do this, not as a member of G.R.O.S.S., but as just another human being.

Plephart, when I read "Boy I hate to back up this Vasueden guy but we do have a common dislike of GROSS so here goes", it strikes me as a VERY weak disclaimer. The statistics don't bother me. Statistics are created for manipulation by ANY side. What pushed me over the edge was your willingness to follow Vasueden's attack with your own. I know there's animosity between MWC and G.R.O.S.S., but please don't connect that with a character like Vasueden.

My second point rests on the difference between you and I, plephart. You seem to believe words mean nothing more than what's there for us to read. That is why you state "And no I don't see how my comments were out of line, while they were associtaed with something he said, I was just stating statistics that happened to not be so flattering for your empire, no name calling at all." No name calling at all? I contend that the words we type ALWAYS carry the emotional intent that guides us as we write. It's a tricky art, but it's also very important for people to "read between the lines". That's where REAL communication resides. ...all in my opinion, as we all know.

One day I may post why I garnered my own genuine dislike for MWC, but I've taken enough space on your thread. If I have misrepresented any of you statements, please clarify them for me.

You are completely right on this count Kit. The simple emotional intent of my words was that GROSS is an empire that thrives on easier difficulties and a cheesy strategy. I see no name calling there, just an opinion that I hold about your empire...take it personally if you must, but there is no more personal attack there than for your own leader Pontius to call our empire whiners. I take no personal offense at that, its just part of the trashtalkin that goes on.

If I understand you correctly we all should be nicey nicey to one another and never trash talk another empire because in reading between the lines we may take things too personally. My suggestion, ,stop reading between the lines and have some fun. If you don't like the trashtalkin start a movement to have it stoppped or stop reading it. Your own leader has made quite an exquisite art of it.

Oh and I must say I can't wait to hear why you genuinely dislike us the MWC so much. Why do I dislike GROSS you may ask, pure and simple, every competitive game needs a villian and a hero, conflict is necessary to further progress. Nothing gets done in nicey nicey comittees where everyone loves everyone else. Do you really think your empire would be number 1 and had such a surge in the metaverse if it weren't for our empires coup of number one not so long ago????

In conclusion, I must most respectfully ask you to suck it up a bit. Trashtalkin is part of the game. It's the hypocrisy that kills me, plephart, not the trash talkin'. Sure we're all hypocrites, but yours is a kind that's very damaging. I'll try to explain, which will also cover how I developed distaste for MWC.



To indicate that an empire thrives on easier difficulty settings and a cheesy strategy is not in itself an emotional intent. It is based on an emotional intent. I would guess that emotion is concern. Concern that G.R.O.S.S. is damaging the Metaverse with an agreed upon tactic. This is not where the hypocrisy lies. Let me point it out:

"I see no name calling there, just an opinion that I hold about your empire..."

Further on you state:

"Trashtalkin is part of the game."

You're implying that your statistics, in which you also state "Read it and weap pirates, step up the difficulty or be mocked", was trashtalkin, correct? And we have no need to quibble on the difference between name calling and trashtalkin, correct? So which is it, plephart? Are you or are you not name calling / trashtalkin? To respond that you do or don't is not the point. You clearly indicate as you backpedal that you don't name call. BUT you admit that you trashtalk. This is hypocrisy. This is misleading. This is a danger to young impressionable minds.

Here's the connection that pisses me off about MWC. A sampling from MWC members:

axels2000 - "MWC stands for noble cause and fair game."

A commendable theme to start with.

surther - "You see here in the Midwest we are raised on values. We respect our neighbors and love our enemies."

This implies that other regions are not raised on values.

plephart - "if you want some helpful tips on how to score in this great game, join up and come into our members only chatroom. We'll get ya up to speed quick! Our only requirements are twofold, have some connection to the Midwestern US of A and despise the evil empire G.R.O.S.S."

So the theme is exclusively the American Midwest now. OK, that's fine.

surther - "We welcome Midwesterners from around the world as well as those from the Midwest. Those of you in the Ukraine or Brazil or anywhere who are in the glorious farm belts and wheatlands come join our mighty empire."

Except that it's more now.

surther - "Our small empire is a cross section of the good old USA and shows why we as a nation are so strong. We set our goals and we stick to it and the Midwest provides the grain and the muscle that makes us strong."

No, sorry, it's just the American Midwest again.

Yes, I'm pulling your quotes from many sources, but this is how I developed distaste for MWC. All of the empires have struggled to develop a theme that works for them. Y'all struggled. That's fine, except that your claim on values has an exclusionary undertone. You're promoting this theme as the "good guys" and kids may actually believe that they really are better than other regions, cultures, etc. It's one thing to be proud of your heritage. It's another to look down on others without even acknowledging your hubris. Chalk it up to role-playing if you like, but I have an uneasy suspicion it goes well beyond role-playing for some MWC members.

Prove me wrong! I want nothing more than to have my fellow Americans show the world that, despite the press, they're actually wonderfully open-minded folks.

I must apologize for being distracted by the pirates and neglecting my more important duty of trumpeting the recent success of our glorious empire. Be proud fellow MWCers we survived a mighty fall from the peak of the metaverse down to fifth place that would have caused mass defections in a lessor empire. We have since climbed our way past the "Fellowship of the White Council" to retake fourth place and now stand a mere 35000 metaverse points from retaking third place from our rivals, the Euros.

Despite our struggles, our galactic appeal as the working man’s empire is still as strong as ever, as we have acquired some excellent new recruits lately. They show all the honest and hardworking attributes that make our empire strong and resilient. It is through the efforts of more excellent recruits like them and the continued hard work of our current dedicated members that we shall obtain our utmost goal, the dethroning of the pirate empire, GROSS. They and others may mock us now, but as the working class we are no strangers to this treatment from the upper classes and they shall resent their statements very soon.

For the metaverse is based on the everyday struggles and toils of the worker class and only by joining us will you help the Midwestern Confederation, the people’s empire, to rise up and give the working man his due.

My goodness do the GROSS folks actually have lives? Kitwarrior ....all I can say to you is that you and Pontius should have a write off contest. I personally could care less about what you think of the MWC. The fact that you have wasted so much of your time reading our old strings and pulling your monolog together just means you are spending less time playing the GAME. Yes it is all about the game. DNS and Email servers are without power hence the MWC website and forums are down. Batteries held us for a little while but the diesel generators, were, sabotaged!!!

Mantainance crews found cheap swill in the tanks and there was drop bear fur all over. No terrorist groups have claimed responsibility yet, but intel has many leads.

Restoration of power will be noted here in due time.

I don't believe I wasted my time reading through the threads of the major empires BEFORE joining one. I didn't want to get buddy buddy with some folks and find out weeks later that they're the exact opposite of what they said they were.

You should join plephart in the themes vs localities discussion that's going on. The ANZACs are doing most of the locality talking, but they were torn between both sides to begin with.

and to think that GROSS and MWC were once considering a merger... what were they thinking!!!

Alrighty then, lookin like we could use some more support in here! Looking forward to jumping in and hammering out some scores. Working my way up thru the galaxy sizes and difficulties as my history will show ya, so far I've managed a large/normal difficulty, but I'm working my way up. Unlike some, I'm taking my time, and enjoying the heck outta this game. Few things I've noticed tho:

Just submitted a military conquest tonight. Thought I'd try something different and lay evil instead of good. It was more difficult. Everyone hated me and they voted to only allow one trade route. But, I won anyway.

I'm trying to see if we can get some more girls to join up with our empire.
