Trade Goods Another Undocumented Feature

Is there anyhere one can go to find a list of the affects of trade goods? I just found out that they had affects. This is just one more totally undocumented feature. I just read a post that said the last thing someone should do is trade Diplomacy Whatever. It looks like I just lost another game do to "guess what this is game play" that is GAl Civ.

You need 'Quick Reference(pdf)' for what you want, but tech tree also will be useful.

Are you incapable of Reading Dick?
The description of what each of the trade goods does is found in the window that comes up when you choose to build it as a social project.

Diplomatic Translators give you a +30% to your Diplomacy. Which is huge and should not be traded to another major power.

How much more documentation do you need than to have it spelled out for you in black and white right on the screen when you chose to build it?

Some of the in-game descriptions for trade goods & wonders aren't accurate. They don't give the same level of information as the descriptions on the normal social projects.

In the quick-panel the descriptions are complete & accurate for everything including trade goods, but many people don't know about the quick-panel.

"Quick Panel" What is it? Where is it?

As far as reading it in black and white when I choose to build it, I don't have a photo graphic memory. I am not that good at memorizing something, while trying to memorize the hole game all at once. Since I can't look it up in the documentation, that basically is what I have to do.

Quick panel is what I call the little window that pops out when you click on a project item in your planet list (F2).

Gee Elle lets see.

On the planetary production screen, select "Diplomatic Translators" from the Social Projects list. On the center panel you get the following:
"These advanced Translators will give those who use them a +30% bonus to negotiations"

There is similar text for all of the trade goods...

Read much?

Actually Dick is sort of um.. well, himself. He was pretty rude in another thread.

But yes, a breakdown of what each trade good does for your empire would be a cool added feature. For if you go to any planet that has completed a trade good (under details), and select it, it does *not* tell you what benefits it gave you. This could be a concern if say.. you were considering trading it to another civilization, major or minor. You should be able to see what benefits you are giving another race. There is no way to know, short of having a reference somewhere, since it does not tell you in the trade window, nor does it appear to be 'built' once it is completed.

You can of course under 'stats' see your overall % for many stats, but it doesn't breakdown where these are from. I think another neat feature would be able to click on any stat, and have a window pop up that shows you where it derives this % from.

Trade Goods, Wonders, and Achievements have effects other than the ones explicitly stated. Those text descriptions override the normal display of their secondary effects to notify you of their ability-altering effects.

Trade Goods universally have no secondary effects in an unmodded game, but mods can give them local effects if they chose to.

I don't know what all of the tradegoods do, but I know the most important and that in general it is always good to have them... I also still do not remember all technologies I need to get to Interstellar Tactics... :notsure:

Umm, don't you guys use JavaScout's excellent GalCiv reference site? If not, I suggest you give it a try. I can't live without it.

For this particular question, you would simply click "Trade Goods" and then "Diplomatic Translators"

Question answered, problem solved, 2 clicks away.

Oh, and I forgot to mention for AIL.ST, your question is one click away on JavaScout's site. Just click "Research Tree" and you can see all the tech prerequisites. Print it out and keep it right next to you while playing. How can you play this game without knowing the tech tree?

I second the motion to go to JavaScout's website. He hacked the program code and gifured out what stuff does.

Thank goodness for people like him :D

Well I'm not sure whether he "hacked" the program or simply made intelligent use of the data files that comprise part of the game installation. I suspect little "hacking" was needed, just some good old-fashioned hard work and using some gray matter. I haven't looked into it myself, but based on the mods etc. it seems you can do plenty with this game without any actual "hacking." (Disclaimer: the definition of the word 'hacking' may be subject to interpretation ...)

You are right Drizzt. All I did was create a program to read the game data files and with a little help asking questions of the developers I created my website. It was the only way in Beta I could keep track of the tech tree, improvements etc.
Hope people find it useful that was why it was created.

I've never used a tech tree. Discovery is part of the fun. After about 5 games, you figure out what's important anyway.

I'm kinda different. I love to read game documentation so early on I printed out the tech tree for analysis of the optimal research paths. :D

Obviously the lesson is, to each his own (sheesh why does saying that make me feel like such a ... camp counselor or something)? The whole point of playing a game is to have fun, right? In my case I like to try to understand all the rules I possibly can before jumping into the action, but that's not the way all people would approach it. Obviously PontiusBruinPilot and RayChua have both done exceptionally well with different approaches. And that's a common theme I've noticed perusing this forum. Many different styles are accomodated well by the game design, which is a credit to the designers and developers.

Dick,

Another option is to DL ZaH's excellent .pdf tech tree from http://galciv.bsd.st/zai_h/. You can open it in its own window and alt-tab between it and GalCiv on your desktop.
