What exactly is no copy protection?

I read this http://www.shacknews.com/laryn.x?story=52094 and i'm confused as to the meaning of it.

Does no copy protection mean that the game is completely transferable to someone else? (Online play included)

Will there still be use of cd keys?

A simple explanation or a link in the right direction would be appreciated.

1) No you cannot transfer your serial number to another person. There is a EULA (End user licence agreement) that says you do not have the right to resell your game or account.

2) Yes very much so. Serial numbers allow us to distinguish between those whom have paid for the product and those whom have not. If you have then you can participate in online play and may recieve additional content we provide to you. Also through Impulse you can download your game as often as you like and always retain the back up of the purchases to your account.

What it all really means is that when you stick in the CD or DvD it just works. It installs and you go right ahead and play, no need to even keep the CD in the tray. Now when you go to play online or get new content you must register the product. There are now more reasons to do that than ever before so it's always in the best intrests. This is what it means to think of the customer first. No CD changing or carrying with you to play games on desktops or laptops. No need to go through any more security than the minimum requires, and once you do you shouldn't have to do it again.

Hope that helps!

It just means there is none of that crap that requires you to have a cd in the drive to play.

It's stuff that pirates crack and don't have to deal with and legitamate users often end up dealing with.

Seabass, if someone does "download only" and does not get the CDs, what happens to downloading the game if (lord forbid) your online service goes under? It probably won't but what if?

....ummmm....isn't this obvious?  If your online service goes down while you're downloading, you.......stop downloading.  You'd pretty much be screwed until you got back online unless you had a previous archive.

What did you expect to happen?

I would expect that to happen if the service is temporarily disabled.

Sorry, I wasn't clear. When I say "your online service goes under" I meant "the whole company and stardock/impulse is gone forever." I did not mean my internet connection going under.

As has been said in the past, if we should ever go out of business, we'll release everything customers need to keep their stuff for good.

I know you guys are busy (and with research I could probably find my own answer), so thank you much for answering the question again, Kryo. And for the record not only is that good news for me, but I also think it is great business practice.

Naa feel free to bug him as much as you'd like and spam his name in IRC all the time to make him answere dumb questions, or to lick him. That's what he's here for. :D

Thank you, now I am both excited and horrified about the interactions in demigod IRC!

Fact is that you can download and archive our games. You can then just store them on disks forever as a back up. The intention is that this can be done (eventually) with out ever needing to go online. If you meant in the more practical sense (if the service drops out in the middle of the download) Impulse can pick up where it left off. Our own company president has said that even if the company goes under he would provide the means for a long time for customers to retrieve their purchases.

I have always had download only order from Stardock, because shipping of the CD to UK is too expensive.

I wonder, if I buy a Stardock game from retail channel with CD, can I obtain a download from Stardock with the CD key if I lost my CD?
