Vasari Super Weapon(Kostura Cannon) even worth researching?

Doesn't seem to be very effective unless you have about 4 of them to really soften up defenses etc...

Compared to the other factions super weapons, it really doesn't seem worth it.

Its useful if you follow the shot with an invasion fleet... Kosturas alone are magnitudes less useful, but they can still knock out research labs and culture centres in the affected gravity well, which in turn lowers the effective number of research labs your enemy has and stops culture coming from that planet.

Sadly... I haven't ever noticed them managing to actually destroy any of the orbital buildings. As near as I can tell they do minor damage and disable everything for a few seconds. So as InfiniteVoid said... follow it with an invasion fleet.

Although to be honest, you don't need to follow it at all - your own fleets are immune to the damage/disabling effect of the Kostura shot (presuming the shot was yours), so you can sometimes use it to turn the tide of an ongoing battle so long as the shot can get there in time (takes a bit of work to time that one out well).

Disabling all oribital buildings for three minutes is nothing to scoff at. For three minutes your enemy will not be able to get resource income from that planet (IDK about tax income), build new ships, research the same levels of techs (since his labs are effectivley "dead"), get trade income, refinery income, or spread culture.

My buddy likes to play as Advent and masses culture centers on border worlds, a quick shot from the Kostura disables them and allows my cap ships to leave my gravity well without fear of my planets being overwhelmed from the loss of the capital ship culture repel bonus.

It can make a fight swing in your favor. The cannon disables all hostile units for 15 seconds, plenty of time to take out many of the most dangerous ones before they come back online.

It is actually more useful than the Novalith, since that late in the game you are bound to have many planets and losing one is no big deal. But your ability to churn out new ships or culture spread being shut down for three minutes is not plesant.

It knocks out the buildings for three minutes? That, I did not know. I thought the whole effect was just for a few (apparently 15) seconds across everything.

Cataclysm2000, do you remember where you saw the 3 minute bit written down? I'd love to actually find a list w/ a true description and the numbers behind it.

Thanks in advance,

From the BuffCannonShellPhase files:

Ships: 200 damage, 15sec disable.

Structures: 800 damage, 180sec disable.

nice I did not know about this. i was wondering about it for a long time because I once build 10 of them thining that i coulddestroy all the structures in a planet with just kestras. needless to say it did nothing worth noting.

of course i had no idea that it shut down structures for 3 mins. if thats the case i could destroy an enemy economy by auto fireing on key worlds every 3 mins.

not a bad weapon.
