You should update. It will make XP better. Plus, you will soon lose coverage for Service Pack 2 soon. As far as I know, there haven't been any problems with AMD and XP. By the way, is Media Center Edition better than the other editions? Just curious.

I have an AMD CPU, updated to SP3 and haven't noticed a bit of difference. Everything runs just like it always has, no faster and no slower.

Same as DethAdder's experience on my end. No change since the update to SP3. No better, no worse.

I have an AMD FX60 running XP Pro, installed SP3 as soon as it came out - no dramas, not even a hint of one. It'll be the usual story, someone somewhere yelled about an install issue they had, and self interested parties got the rumour going - the usual irresponsible claptrap.

Even if 1000 PCs had issues with it, and I have heard of not a single one (not even "rumours"), with the zillions out there, the odds of successful install are going to be are going to be in the order of 99.9999%+, pretty good odds by any standard.

At risk of sounding "nannyish", if you have that real practical concern re failure on a business PC, and its utterly business critical, backup essential data (which you should be doing anyway). If the PC runs "minute to minute" daily operations, and you are still concerned, dont upgrade, there is no "killer" aspect about SP3 - dont get sucked into the whole "install because its there" mindset.

Murphys Law often hits PCs and they have a habit of going wrong at the wrong time - if there's ever a right time - but the chances of it going bang over this are remotely miniscule.

Actually, it was a very real problem, but affected only HP or Compaq users with AMD chips. This is because the OEM vendors used images of the OS that were configured for Intel chips. The update to SP3 would then result in BSODs for people that had AMD cihips in their machines. MS has since released an update to fix it, IIRC.

- HP or Compaq but only as OEM assemblies, and of those only AMD ones.
- Restricted to new PC buys
- MS has since released a patch

Odds of success plumett to 99.99% across the user base - its a bummer if you were one of them though  OP should relax, it applied to new purchases of those PCs only, not across the board hassles, even then only if a new buy right off the bat at the time of upgrade to SP3. A far cry from "affecting all AMD PCs" that rumour control had people believing. Its not even an issue any more.

You were very wise to check, regretably many dont bother to do any kind of background read on this stuff, and wonder why the world falls apart. Until you read the bad ones, you dont know which are the good ones. Until you ask questions you dont come across the good gems from people, like the one from Coelocanth.

Good luck with the install, I'm sure it will go fine *struggles into Flak Jacket*
