Desert Planets: Bulwark against intruders?

The game manual implies that while they can't support as much population as Terran planets, Desert planets are valuable because they make "good bulwarks against intruders".  How are Desert planets easier to defend than other planets?

While it may not be as important as a Terran planet, it can still be heavily fortified. The enemy is thus given the option of getting bogged down by stopping to clear it out, thus allowing your more important worlds more time to prepare and your fleets to get in place; or they can bypass it in hopes of finding something better, but that opens up their forces to being cut off and wiped out.

Desert planets are still highly profitable as well. They're just not quite as profitable as Terran planets.

What's the max number of tactical slots (ignoring the Advent's +4 research boost) for a Desert planet again? Isn't it 35, same as for a Terran?

Deserts have the most logistic slots , not tactical slots. Im not sure what the manual is getting at.

Advantages of deserts...

- Mass Trade Planet for Hugh income
- Mass Research Planet
- Multi-Factory fleet pump

Do they have more ability for people to survive underground (hold out longer from bombings)?

The manual really has no reason to say that. All planets (except asteroids which have 25) have 35 tactical spots. desert worlds have 36 max logistic compared to 24 for the terran (barring the TEC logistics upgrade).

Also, they have the same life scale etc. Really there is no reason for that comment in the manual.

Although, Deset planets are very useful for their very high number of logistics spots.

Is is possible that at the time the manual was printed the devs were thinking of giving it extra tactical slots, and at the last minute decided it would be best if had extra logistical?
