TEC counter to Advent ilums?q

When me and my friend play, he ALWAYS spams ilums. 100% ilum army.

What's the counter? as TEC?

Standard unit counters. Light Frigates are strong vs. Ranged Frigates--if you're TEC, use Cobalts, if you're Vasari, use Skirmishers. If you're far enough advanced, use Kodiaks or Enforcers, respectively. Advent ships are rather weak when they don't work with other ship-classes, so any spam-fleet is easily dealt with.

You couldn't be more wrong.

Any spam is quickly dealt with. Mixed fleet is invariably better. Against Illuminators, i suggest that you remember that Javelis = 4fleet supply, and Illums=6 and are also much more expensive.

Here's what i go with by the time i have research for my second capital and tier 1 fleet supply

25+ LRM
9 Hashiko
1 Kol
1 Marza.

With hashikos healing units as Illums damage them, you'll be surprised how efficiently you'll defeat his fleet. Illuminators take a bunch of time to kill hashikos.

Destroy your enemy before he gets illums.

Build a superior economy.

Your own LRM (Javelins)

Carriers with fighters

And maybe scout.

ilums are extremely powerful but they suck vs bombers so thats what id do.. just make some hoshikos percherons maybe a Sova Carrier some javalis supported by kodiaks
thats basically what i do anyway... fighters and bombers will own ilums easily.. just keep your carriers moving and make sure youve got your research incase you get upclose with ilums research will almost always save your life.

I have to disagree with the LRM answer. Fighting rock with rock doesn't work in this case. Hoshiko's are key though.

I've personally found that illums will mop the floor with lrms, even when the lrms have hoshikos, but there is one thing that will annoy the piss out of an Illum spammer. That's flak with hoshikos. Unfortunately, a fleet of flak takes forever to kill illums, but focus firing does make it go quicker. Also, since flak have so much health and plenty of armor, Illums just don't do enough to put them away quickly.

That is not the answer though, or at least it shouldn't be. In general flak will prove to be a stall, because they do take forever to kill shit. The answer imo is to get flak to buy time to get to heavies.

One rule that always applies, however, is this. As TEC, if you're fighting Advent, your fleet must be bigger, or you will lose. Advent units are better and TEC units have tissue paper for armor it seems sometimes. The only way to win as TEC is to use that eco to get a bigger fleet than your opponent.

This game was long drawn out (2hrs).

I managed to max out the Novalith line of research (The one that also benefits the LRMs) and hull.

And I built 1.5x as many LRMs as his ilums and then I beat him.

But I need a better method. this took too long.

I guess I didnt use nearly as many Hoshikos as I needed to, but how do you get a strong economy right off the bat??

Your trade port tech is not very far off. Research it ASAP and between building fleet allow to add these in your logistical makeup.

If he has that big of mass you might try using a pack of scouts in addition to your own LRM's and Hoshikos.

Use the scouts to flank around behind his illums and he will probably not even care about them, but they will do solid damage against them.

I think some people overlook the ability of scouts' turn speed, flight speed, and acceleration. Even if he does manage to turn his LRM line around just fly right through him and start shooting again while he is turning. And if he splits his fire between two sides he is only hurting himself.

My two cents

I never thought of the scouts used in this way. I shall try it out. I like researching the bomb for them, and sending in a couple of waves to take out enemy structures. It's good for harrasing undefended planets, or just speeding up system takeovers.

It's rather silly that we still need to have this conversation :\ It seems assault frigs are still broken.

The Hoshiko/LRM combo worked out very well indeed.
