Pretty much every place has it listed for Mid to late April for us Aussies.
Which is why I decided to download it through stardock shortly after release.
If you are tired of waiting I can not recommend using stardock highly enough.

Its cheaper to buy than it will be from off the shelf.
You get the collectors edition.
The game is only about 800mb.
Game can be down loaded again at anytime - no need to worry about lost/damaged discs.
Manual & reference cards come as PDF's.

The only reasons you would not want to do this is if you are still stuck with Dial up net access or do not have the means to pay for it online.

Save the planet! say NO to excessive cardboard & plastic crap!

It will be sold in EB Games on 16 of April.

I have placed my pre-order for my copy.

Here Here...
I am an Aussie (who would have thought with my nickname) and buying online was a hassle free experience.
It was my first game download purchase, which I was driven to do because I just couldn't wait to play this game till our release date. (They delay for the bank to setup my debit card was intolerable!).

I did not have any problem at all. Other than not having a shiny manual to put up on my shelf with the rest of my handbooks, it is no difference. Though, given the swift patch releases i've been seeing (3 cheers), even if I did have the game handbook in hard-copy, it would have been outdated by now...

So yes, I would suggest to download it. No point in holding off on the goodness you are about to experience...

We in NZ already have it on our shelves :P (I personally was in the beta though, so it didn't matter to me)

I've been playing SOASE here in Aust for over a month already, and have my collector's edition box sitting on my shelf. Why wait, go online!

The store he saw it at probably imported the NA version.

The Australian distributor/publisher was due to be Aurion from what I read - and they went belly up around Xmas, so a new distributor company has had to be involved. As far as I can tell, that is what the hold up was - PC Powerplay stated in the Jan or Feb edition it was due in March, but the latest date I have (www.gamehead.com.au) it about 24/04/2008 (http://www.gamehead.com.au/PC-Games/Action/Sins-Of-A-Solar-Empire-PC-Games/104802)

It was Auran's development arm that was having issues recently. The publishing arm is fine and has had their Sins release scheduled for this month for quite a while.

I'm another Aussie and a big fan of digital distribution. Sins downloaded in about an hour or so a few months back when I bought it, and generally found the whole procedure hassle free.

PC Powerplay Issue 149 had the release date as 1 March 2008
Why has it taken so long if the delay had nothing to do with Auran folding???
Europe has had it for months!!!

NOT HAPPY JAN!!!!

Buy it online, seriously. You get to play the game 2 hours after purchase (depending on your download speed), and you get the box and everything else in a few weeks after that.

I've had the game since it was initially released anywhere, why bother waiting for the retail release when you have to wait longer and pay more just to get the game?

I don't know when that issue was printed, but the Auran release date has been set in April since the beginning of the year at least. And Europe does not have it at retail at all short of imports, as no publishers there have agreed to take the game on (they say the German game market would not support it).
