No Sound in Cut Scenes

When GalCiv starts up I hear music, etc. but when the opening cutscene starts, the sound goes dead. When the cutscene is over, sound returns. I am running on a Dell Inspiron 5000 with a ESS Maestro 2E sound card, DirectX 9A. ONE WEIRD THING: I tried reinstalling GalCiv. When I started the game without patches, the cutscene music/sound was there. As soon as I updated to the latest GalCiv patch the problem was back. Any ideas?

Hmm...one of the updates did have a change to the mp3 code in galciv.

see if running this helps:

Cari I have the same problem. When I load, the cutscenes have no music. The background music is there, the aliens music is there, but all cutscenes no go.

And sometimes when I load it gives me that skippy poppin feelin on the background music as well. But I just exit, reload and that clears, but the cutscenes' sounds are gone permanantly. Will that link help me as well? And is this corrected in 3A.? If so, I'll just download it after my next game.

The link re-installs system default codecs that are often replaced by 3rd party software by buggier versions.

There is no change to the sound code between 1.03 and 1.03a. You'll probably want to download the next patch regardless.

Also it might help to have the 'User Defined Playlist' option set to off. It helped me before to restore my music (it might help you).

Same here no sound in cutscenes and no sound when doing little things like pressing on a menu or the money sound when you purchase something, I can tell right away that the sounds not going to work because the sound that the menu make whenis opens with your options does not work since I got the newest version

Well, at least I'm not the only one with this problem. I'm going to try a clean Win 98 Install and see if that changes anything. If not, I guess I'll have to play on another computer, though I was really looking forward to having it on my laptop.

Just out of curiosity: Has anyone having this issue tried playing the cutscenes outside of the game with the Bink player? If so, does the sound play? The cutscenes are the *.bik files in the ...\Galactic Civilizations\movies directory. The Bink player can be downloaded from http://www.radgametools.com/down/bink/radtools.exe

I had half of the sounds (battles and menuclicks) not working when i first installed Galciv. After patch 1.03 all the sounds (like the intromenu opening) were gone. I reinstalled using the default directorysettings (which i changed the first time i installed, Program Files/Strategy First/Galactic Civilisations) and now i hear everything.

I've never had anything but the default directories. And more and more of my sounds are suddenly disappearing. It's no biggie but probably is worthy of the devs attn.

Hmm weird. So it's not just mp3s that stop working, but also wavs.

Does your debug.err file report any DirectSound errors?

Did you check your prefs.ini file (in your data directory) to make sure that DisableSFX and DisableMusic were both set to zero? (like maybe your prefs.ini file got overwritten...)

Any new information on this?

I have this problem and solved it by launching it from stardock - works fine then;)

I have music but no other sound after loading the latest upgrade. No joy on the codex file. It would be nice to fix this.

Well, now it crashes just as soon as my latest saved games load, and I get to the summary screen...Okay, what's up?

Hmmm...this thread caught my attention 'cause my sound fx never worked from the get-go. I downloaded the codec thingie, reinstalled, defragged, sacrificed a goat, all to no avail; I chalked it up to my chintzy computer and just got used to playing with no sound. Then I tried Elad's suggestion -- starting from Stardock -- and voila! It worked. Cool. So, if you're in the same boat as I am, you might wanna try this.

Dierkes Tim, if you're using the windowed version, it's not up to date.  But 1.04, which is coming out today, should have the ability to run the normal exe with a command line parameter to make it run in windowed.  If that's not the case, I would need to see a SmartException report (SmartException can be installed from under Free Stuff in Stardock Central).

As for the sound, if Elad's suggestion doesn't work, can you please run dxdiag and send the report to me?  We're still trying to figure this one out.
