Any tactics needed?

Hey,

I've only been playing the game for a short time now, but I was wondering whether there were any tactics needed to be effective in battle?  Currently, I'm just sending fleets in and watching them auto bash enemies or get bashed.  Besides the occassional retreat, or movement, I haven't really taken an active part in deciding the outcome battles.  Is there something I'm missing or is that what the combat basically falls down too?  I was sorta hoping for a homeworld esque kind of thing with 3d movement and battle tactics;  Sins is still a great game but would have been nice if those features were implemented(though I'm not sure how tough it would be to manage the empire and manage combat at the same time).

You don't need the same fast-paced clicking that you find in a pure RTS, and the AI does a reasonably good job at deciding what to do. There is, however, plenty to do in combat. Positioning your capital ships and taking manual control of their abilites is usually a must. Next comes focus-firing, staying away from enemy tactical structures (or close to your own), positioning and using the abilites of your smaller ships and so on. If you only have a couple of small frigates, I guess there isn't all that much you can do (except focus-firing), but in large battles when you get higher up on the tech-tree there are a lot more options.

As Ansver said, the AI does a passable job, especially if you group your ships into sensible fleets.

In close or critical battles, though, you can do a better job by microing some elements of the fight. There are a lot of tactical options open to you.

Oh, and there is 3D movement - check the key bindings for the Z axis key (you may need to set one).
