Does anyone get Corvettes any more?

Now that Star Fighters are 3 attack, why would I bother spending the time wandering into the research dead-end known as Corvette Technology?

Don't bother wasting valuable research on that research path in the early game. Trade for it as and when you have spare trade credits. It is more expensive though since it is ship tech.

My point is not that corvettes are expensive early-game, but that they are almost useless any time since their main point was to convince the AIs that you have some military strength (since it doesn't count BattleAxes for very much) and now you can do the same thing for less with Star Fighters.
Add that to the fact that they are a dead-end choice and it strikes me that they are now an evolutionary withered branch.

The starfighter and corvettes now cost the same in both building cost and maintenance. The corvette basically gets another defense point and 2 more HPs. So having corvettes make starfighters obsolete.

They still serve well in the 3rd ship era as scouts (with Eyes) and raiders. With enough military bonuses, they can take out small starbases.

I'm still rather confused over the military might deterence issue. Quote from Brad in newsgroup:

"Military line graph is based on the attack + defense of yoru ships. Not how
many you have."

So if military rating is what is reflected in the military line graph, then corvettes will have a slightly higher deterence with its additional defense point.

But I have heard many say that only attack count.

Early in the game I spend about 3 turns with my Military at 100% and make every star system build 2 Corvettes. They have a low maintenance so that it doesn't drain my finances, they have a decent enough att/def so that my military ranking goes up enough to keep other Civs from extortion, and later in the game (when you are making battleships) they can be used to trade for tech, as gifts for other civs, or to kamikaze against Drengin dreadnauts - softening them up for your battleship to clean off.

Take a ride.

I've never bothered with them at all, even before the latest patch, I just go straight for Battleaxes and Battlehammers. The Hero (or HMS Endeavour in my games :) ) normally finds a couple and I put them on Sector Sweep on the outskirts of my empire and later give them away for diplomatic reasons. One proviso: I normally go for the peaceful trader route and haven't tried above 'Bright' Level. YMMV as they say.
