Easter Eggs and such in Gal Civ

Easter Eggs and such in Gal Civ

The name speaks for itself.

Here are the ones I have noticed:

Star Names:
Sauron - Supreme evil Lord of Darkness (Mark II) from Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, appears as a large flaming eye, lost ability to take a pleasent form after downfall of Numenor which he brought about
Betelgeuse - Red Giant star in the Orion Constellation

Ships:
USS Hero and other Survey vessels: Hummm.... looks like a certain USS Enterprise to me... only some minor mods

Misc Stuff not in game
Arnor - Brad's Empire, sister country to Gondor. Destroyed by the Witch-King of Agmar, lord of the Nazgul. ;p
Brad's Evil Walkthroughs on www.galciv.com Check out the empire and leader names

Of course, this is a rather pathetic list. :notsure: I guess my excuse will be I am too busy playing and learning the game right now. Some more are found in this thread: http://www.galciv.com/forum.asp?BID=GF&id=46404 started by Nicolas Bossy. Time for peeps to add to it.

Given the the role of influence and cultural conquest in GalCiv, I keep expecting to find a planet called 'Banks' :) .

I think there may be some authors names for the planets: Cherryh comes to mind (as in C J Cherryh).

I'd heavily recommend these fantasies:
His Dark Materials trilogy (Pullman) UK author
The Ill-Made Mute (The Bitterbynde Trilogy) (Cecilia Dart-Thornton) Oz
Sabriel (The Old Kingdom Trilogy) (Garth Nix) Oz

'Leto - Duke Leto Atreides, Dune?'Actually, this one would be a mythological reference. Leto was the mortal mother of Phoebus Apollo (Zeus being his father).

NOOO!!!!!
It's definitly a Dune(Arakis-desert planet)reference :d .
Another good humorous read are the Mission Earth books by L.Ron Hubbard.

I noticed last night a star named 'Bespin'. In case you don't know, that's the planet where Lando set up Cloud City above in Empire Strikes Back.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread.

Wakefield - last name of central family in Arthur C. Clarke's late Rama II and Garden of Rama. Noticed it last night when I picked up GoR to read again.

farstryder: i totally agree on the Kim Stanley Robinson books. I haven't read them for a while, but they are superb. Also, In Death Ground, Crusade, The Shiva Option, and Insurrection by David Weber and Steve White are good, i think. If any of you like to re-name your starships, those books provide many ship names that can be used.

Arnor... what? o_O?

Btw, Betelgeuse was the home system of the Syreen in the Starcon series, IIRC.

Their second home. The Syreen's first world was Syra, but it was destroyed by Mycon Deep Children.
