Vridian: as far as we know; Beka didnt make it all the way due to the Flash. We know the Vedrans ARE there and they know what Hunt is doing; Admiral Uxledila (sp?) the Vedran did appear on Andromeda.

Samms - actress Emma Samms?
Gamma Alpha - I seem to remember there was a SF board wargame by that name back in the 1970's
Bullwinkle - did anyone get this one?
Timbol - non-OS/2 veterans may not recognize this name, but I did; Mike Timbol was one of the stalwarts on the comp.os.os2.advocacy newsgroup on Usenet back in the "old" days of the mid-1990's
Kinnison - this is obviously where the Lensmen are based
Pippen - this may be a misspelling of "Pippin", or perhaps it's in honor of B-baller Scottie Pippen
Marilyn - Marilyn Monroe?
Lacroix - the only Lacroix I can think of offhand is the character from the 1990's vampire show "Forever Knight"

The Honor Harrington series is pretty cool in its own right, however it makes a lot more sense if you've read the Horatio Hornblower series.
Hornblower is wet-navy (2D battle-area), Harrington is space-navy (3D battle-area).
Hornblower fights in Ships-of-the-Line (1D to cut a 2D space in half). Harrington fights in Ships-of-the-Wall (2D to cut a 3D space in half).
Weber's entire justification for the convolutions he went to in the drive mechanics of the Honor Harrington series were so that he could write a similar series to the Hornblower books but set in space. Did a good job, too

Regarding authors:
Try Feintuch if you like Hornblower in space / space opera
George Martin is very entertaining, but after a while I feel like I'm reading an episode of Dynasty, All My Children (pick your favorite soap opera) - sooner or later, everyone's gonna either get pregnant, go blind, meet their evil identical twin at least once. Martin seems to have written himself into a corner in some areas of the story - it's pretty sad when you have to build up the "Onion Knight" as a major character, as he's killed off or dismantled/deconstructed/marginalized many of his core characters.

One note on Yggdrasil (sp?).

It is the world tree from Norse mythology, but in the world of SF it is the name of a tree ship in the Hyperion series.

I'm waiting to see local references from Michigan... particularly the town GalCiv was written in. Nothing yet, but maybe there'll be something in the expansion pack.
