What are the asterisks for?

This has been driving me nuts. Next to the planet name there is often an asterisk (*). What does this mean? I notice when I send out troops or colonists it disappears.

yes i see these *'s all the time on most (but not all) of my planets. I don't know what they are for either.

When you see the * it means there are no ships in orbit of that planet.

Thanks! Now I can sleep at night.

Not that that is particularly useful. Indication that the planet is over the normal tax, manufacturing limit, or an overpopulation indicator would be more useful.

In the Planet List sidebar (F2), it can be a quick indicator of "core" vs. "border/fringe" worlds should (like me) you only garrison your exterior systems.

Ah, the old Fort Wily tactic. Of course, if the AI has any range boosters, kiss your core worlds good bye.

The AI always attacks the closest planet/unit. So putting all you defenses on your borders is a workable strategy.

The AI could be easily changed into taking opportunities when they arise. Think about it, would you go after a heavily defended world or an undefended world that's a little further away?
