BEST way to defend your solarsystem?

I belive first is your ships in orbit are the besy way to defend agaist enemy attack/invasions on solarsystem's.Then second would be soldiering.

If there is a better way please post in order's of best.

On a Tiny map, I like to surround my home star system completely with starbases and then upgrade them one at a time. I figure that *eventually* I'm going to build 5-6 anyway, so they might as well defend my most important system at the same time.

One nice side benefit of this is that you can build constructors to improve your colony defenses (instead of ships), and this keeps your military maintenance low.

I tend to keep some ATTACK ships. When some enemies are coming, I don't let him come very near... He gets my mass attack. Sometimes I keep these attack ships out of reach of the enemy, just one tile after the system in opposite direction from where they're coming. So they don't reach my attack fleet/s. :D

I'll second the missles. In the late game they are a fantastic way to defend your sectors. A couple of missles and a few dreadnaughts / Battle Hammers and your all set.
