You want cheese? ill give you cheese...

ok, ive heard of ppl protecting their planets with freighters once the UP passes the law protecting them, i took it to another level... i started top left, yor under me, drengin under them, torians top right, and the other got killed before i found them by the yor and drengin... (large map btw) im going for the tech victory, the UP passes that law, i fill the borders with freighters(one per square in a straight line) and protect my WHOLE empire, so i spend NO money on military at all, except if i want more freighters to encompass more territory...

currently, im trying to protect the whole torian empire, my allies, who are currently fighting a war against the yor/drengin alliance... my tech is zooming, so is my social projects(terraforming in 40 days, no starbases ;)) easiest game ever...

i should mention that over 200(!!!im not kidding!!!) battleships from yor and drengin each are at my borders waiting to get in :p ill have to try that at masochistic lol

nice thing is, im not stuck in only 1 square, i spread over almost all the top part now, when i have time, ill start putting them around the drengin and yor, take their ressources, piss them off a little more :P they are so mad at me, the wont even trade ONE technology for the rest of mine(over 20 :P) its pretty funny :D

i dont know cheezor, if it does, im screwed, but im 99.9% sure that the law has no time limit, so far i played a few hours with this tactic, and the law is there...

This one surely falls under the definition of cheese. I don't know if it can be fixed, though. And I'm not even sure Stardock would want to do anything about it. Brad stated in another thread (rougly a week ago) that he didn't feel the need to adress every cheese tactic reported. He'd much rather spend his time on enhancing the game, leaving it up to each players morale whether he would want to employ these tactics or no.

to be honest, ill be using this only this game, it gets kinda boring... yknow, having to spend NO money on military, no army maintenance, 70% research, 30% social(high i know, but im terraforming :D)

and only when ill get bad starting positions when going for tech win...

and its not something that will happen often, you have to wait till the UP passes the law. lucky for me, the first meeting it was passed :D

A simple fix would be to allow any ship to pass onto and through any square occupied by a freighter once this law is passed.

Just because they cannot be attacked doesn't mean they should be an inpenetrable wall.

As mentioned in another thread this tactic/problem was reported at an early level in development but requires a fundamental change to gameplay. Ships would have to be allowed share the same space for this to work. This was considered in alpha stage tbut too many problems were envisaged.

I've never had the UP law passed, but the question that occurs is, is it possible to invade a planet with a freighter in orbit after it has been passed? If not, that would make it akward to avoid the cheese

Oh, and jacqt, you might want some combat ships arounds. If Space Sharks/Pirate turn up, I doubt they're members of the UP.

You may get another UP vote which says freighters are protected for 5 years at 10% cost (instead of always at 25%). When the second UP vote ends, all the freighters can be struck again.

well, if the ai ever decides to do the same to you, you can just leave the UP and blow the living bejesus out of them, right?

That's a good point - will the AI players ever leave the UP? And if not, why not? I think it would be a viable option at times, particularly for the more evil races.

MojoJojoUk, actually there was a space shark, bu it just detroyed my mining starbase, i got an avatar, and killed it, as for pirates, they were stuck outside my wall :P

heres an update:

i got around to building enough to protect my ally, the torians, and the drengin/yor alliance would stock up on ships around there too, so i gave them overlord tech, took them awhile to use it, but once they did, i opened their wall, and let the torians out to drengin/yor butts, and they did to a certain extent. in the mean time, i would research my way up the tech tree, get excalibur tech(way too strong :P) buy one(had over 60000 money at that point) then send it out to kill every single ship near my border. one particular yor pack of ships wouldnt go down, it was dreadnaught after dreadnaught, with some bcs, and a few corvettes, i couldnt c the number but 1, a 1, i thought, easy, max of about 19 ships, ill kill it in one turn.

WRONG they had 144 ships all stacked! in the end, my excalibur had 80 hp left, out of over 400, sure was worth it though, it was really cool to see the yor and drengin military power line get down to almost nothing with ONE ship :P

i kept on reasearching,(tech goal) while kicking butt, and i did.

btw, i got a 618, best i got so far, but i wont try that agin.

ive never seen the ai leave the UP, i guess its important to them... if they had left it, id be space dust right now, and the torians would be my space dust neighbors :P

Death Knights... cool...:p

Though I always play evil, think we should have a good defensive ship for good as well to balance out.

Didn't realise that there was an active discussion on the noticeboard.

Or they could make it so that the law only protects the mini-freighters.

1.03 has this fixed, The trade federation UP issue will always have a time limit so this tactic will only work for 5 years or so and then the trade federation will expire and you will go down.

glad its fixed, it was kinda boring. only good part was when i BOUGHT my overlord, and killed every single A.I. ships, when they had only dreadnaughts :)
