Wish list for GalCiv (or GalCiv2)

Wish list for GalCiv (or GalCiv2)

I think GalCiv is very well done in many areas. The one major complaint I have about the game is the combat, especially the ship combat. One of my favorite parts of the early MOOs was the ability to create your own ships by combining various ship sizes with various weapon and defensive systems buildouts. While there were some exploits there for those who choose to use them, I found the ship building and the ship to ship combat one of my favorite parts of those games. In fact, it made combat worthwhile. In GalCiv I avoid combat at all costs because it is so boring. If I could ask for one change, it would be ship design and combat like MOO (I want this even more than multiplayer).

Also, I'd like to know how the scoring system works....

Bah Stop Dreaming, You should try to keep a positif sight at what youve already pocess, you know the only way you could really help the industry is to talk about this game with your friends hmm at least that's what im doing rite now, Fell Free to Flame Me If YoURE Gay

I feel like you people are Triumph the Insult Comic Dog. Yes...yes...I like your tactical combat idea. Yes...yes, it's a fabulous idea...FOR ME TO POOP ON! Oh well, my idea is clearly not popular in this forum, but I'm going to leave it on my wishlist nonetheless.

It's odd that tactical combat is so unpopular here as MOO is considered a classic and included tactical combat. Many people have referenced bad games like MOO3, but I'm not looking for bad tactical combat. Also, I would have liked an option to fight a combat tactically at your discretion. The default would be to let the computer resolve it as it does now. You would have to select tactical combat if you wanted it.

There does seem to be some limited support for ship design, including from Frogboy. I guess I've always enjoyed creating my own strategies by combining technologies in different ways, I think it would be fun to be able to create ship templates to use to build new ship types etc., but it's less intriging, quite frankly without tactical combat since you can't really see the results of your work.

Oh well, I am happy about the smackdown on Metaverse cheaters, and I am impressed by the support and continued updates and tweaks this game has received by Frogboy. Not to mention how active he is in these forums. Keep up the good work Frogboy. All in all, GalCiv is a great game, and I look forward to future updates and to the next version.

Keep the topic going. Hopefully some good ideas can be generated. And please resist the urge to spew nonsense like you want a nipple-tickler, butt-scratcher, beer-fetcher feature.

Indeed Ryan, the key problem with the game as I see it is that the AI doesn't intelligently use starbases, and doesn't intelligently attack.

i say no tac combat but way more control over the goverment like tons of differnt laws to chose to have (effects moral) more custemization for your empire like your Title: the eg; Grand Admiral Ichi Maru the Wickid.
your Insignia.

each senitor has a name and likes and dislikes you have to look out for and you can talk to them derectaly.

being able to talk to people other then the leader of the alien civ and most of all....................................................................................................................................................................... Make Me The Project Leader!!!! or maybe the content desginer or at least the guy who sits there making it look like he works but realy doesnt and throws random comments at you like eg: your a Reprahugering Jaflagalt and the 't' at the end is silent!!!!!! or hafietroit is a perfectly cromulent word or even "random sounding cliking noises that acualy meen things but most people are to stupid to tell the difference"!!!!!!!!

1.i want the ability to call for the UP to meet so i can discuss topics.

2. a more interactive spy system. like actual spies to go on missions to sabotage other empires, assassinate leaders, or capture the plans to a terror star.

3. a new way to capture enemy systems. like cultural influence but instead it would be by fear. like the system is so scared it joins up with you rather than face the alternative.

4. rather than a terror star the good guys get a happy star. it creates suns with planets with a 20 rating or something.

5. random events in which the good people benefit too!

6. prettier battle scenes. with ships that fire red beams of energy that sweep back and forth. the ship combat just needs more stuff to it. force fields that light up. engine sounds as they travel around and light up. also fighters and carriers with bombers, and the fighters could use fuel like in civilizations and they can launch off and attack other systems or ships a couple spaces away with devastating attacks.

7. when earth starts off the ships should be the brownish tint like the interface and when you become good they should become silver and when you become evil they should become red and black.

and galciv should do your taxes too.

Wondering if closer links and ties could evolve between the Metaverse and the game itself. As starters, would be fascinating to have guest appearances from the most powerful empires and players in the game too.

Imagine spotting G.R.O.S.S. or Ray the Wanderer somewhere in your galaxy, in one form or the other. What I'm thinking as the first step is just having leaders/planets/ships named after some of these famous players. Then, perhaps some kind of alternated behaviour and more dynamic aspects could be brought in also.

Bringing in the United GalCiv Community a little more!
We hey! :HOT:

More of an idea for GalCiv 2, if ship design is going to be a big part of it, how about race specific designs (yep know this has been posted on about ten different threads) and technologies - maybe with a ship/starbase (even a design your races 'soldier'.. heavily armoured Dregins with big guns.. :)) design tool (I kinda like the one which came with Impossible Creatures.. good idea and flexible). Also would certain designs and upgrades only be available at planets which have built the required shipyard upgrades?

Though this would be a bit of a waste of effort in a purely strategic combat (how would you use your killer ship design when the combat is basically 'risk' like - you couldn't have extremely fast ships, with shields and no armour taking on big heavily armoured ones 'cos you wouldn't be able to replicate the hit and run tactics), but then again I think tactical combat would slow the game down to a crawl.

I love this game. The AI is incredible. I think it has soooo much potential. Here's my wish list,

1.- Planets that don't produce social (or military) projects should have less spending. This way you yet back a fraction of the unused resources in the form of money (for example 100pu that are idle only cost 25bc instead of the full 100pc). Think about it, shouldn't the cost of an empty factory with a lonely security guard be smaller than the cost of a factory full of busy workers?.
Another situation that happens more often: What if the factory is only busy for the first few days of the month, (ie the project was almost completed during the last turn)?. I think that right now you a get charged for the unused pu. This should also change as above, so you don't get charged 100% of the pu cost when the workers on on vacation. For example suppose the final part of a project costs 40pu, and you are producing 60pu during the month. The workers will finish 20 days into the month and you sould get charged 40+20*.25 = 45bc instead of 60bc). Same thing goes for scientist who finish early in the month.

2.- Get rid of pre-defined sqare sectors. The way I see it they are just a way of making gross aproximations. Use the smaller grid squares instead. Influence would require more calculation time, but now a days even the windows operating system could handle that without crashing (well, maybe not). The smaller grid sqares would give "smooth" influence borders, instead of the big chunky blocks we have now. Also, a starbase would be at the center of it's own "circular sector" affecting anything that's inside it. This means no more ilogical situations where you have 2 plantes close to eachother that are not affected by the same starbase b/c a sector line goes between them.

3.- Have an AI editor in the game. I guess that something like this already exists for the devolpment team (they would have to make it usuable to non programers, kind of like those web page editors that people use wihtout actually knowing how to program in html).
A user AI editor would open lots of new posibilies (tournaments, lot's more allien enemies each with their own personalities, etc, etc).

Definately have tech descriptions being read to you (audio). Like SMAC had. That would be cool.

has anyone ever played starcraft?
1)i really like the idea of the animation involve with every units. not that i want animation for every ship but i think the game would be more lively if there was more animation particulary human faces in the game. with human voices. considering this game is about human expansion into space i think the lack of human presence really takes the humanity out of a human experience. or perhaps just animation in general because it adds some dynamicism to an otherwise static universe. i want to see people speak.

2) a real gnn. like m002. with a robot or something. the news events bring a certain lief into the game. it was better than the screens and windows of galactic civilization.

3) real tactical combat. and ability to ignore tactical combat. i dislike the idea of having no real combat in a 4x game. in master of orion 2, i enjoyed designing my own fleets with their own name making my own special death legions. i particulary enjoyed hijacking ships and deconstructing them to use their technology.

4) more events. more linked events. so much to make each game unique.

5) unlocking abilities or events after every win. just extra stuff you can unlokcin the game like more racial abilties, to make the next game more interesting.

6) a more improved diplomatic relations. like being able to hurt relationships between two races or bridge relationships between two races. a more intelligent trade system, no one is dumb enough to trade 1d phasing for battleship right? or vice versa.

First of all I want to clarify something, games like this that I like and don't like.
Don't like: MOO series, yes I am alone, but I just don't like them.
Love: BOTF, Star General, Rebellion, Supremacy, Millenium 2.2, you get the picture...

Now considering what I said, here is my wishlist though I know most of them cannot happen in a sequel because stardock don't want them :-)

1. Option for tactical combat, like BOTF would be great, like Rebellion would be nice, like Star General would be acceptable :-) For those who ask about the last one, yes it is similar to Galciv but with the different ranges and with each ship being very good or bad about another one it was/is a blast to play.

2. Even if you decide to leave the combat as it is, please some more effects, eye candy if you wish. I hate the oh so well known "don't need no eye candy for TB strategy games, it is bullshit. Perhaps at least more ways for ships to be destroyed, more ways to see the ships firing, things like that at a minimum!

3. Fix the date refreshing thing. :-)

4. Multiplayer would be nice, though I am afraid that most people would just quit when losing...

5. Some notion of borders like in BOTF. That game had it done almost perfectly imo.

6. More races but also the option to lead them instead of humans if wanted to..

7. Change? of the ship grafix or something be done to make the ships stand out in looks. They look now too much the same, they look too short and fat in a way. (btw I am fat :-) ). Star Generals had it great I think with how they depicted the ships graphics, just wonderful...

8. I don't like how the battles are fought in a way. In an extra way :-). I would like a mass of small ships to have a good chance of destroying a slow and big ship. I feel like as it is now like when I am playing Red Alert (was). You have your perfect defence (big ship) and all those ants come one at a time and you squash them. Now, I know it isn't that bad, but I just wanted to make my point clear.

9. Ability to change the colour of your units/map?

Thanks for reading this.

A few things mostly with diplomacy....
- The ability to tell someone if you don't make peace with another race that you'll pound them into submission or cut off trade or something. I mean, comeon, I can't even threaten a trade embargo!

example: Drengin make peace with the Torians or I'll kill you. At the moment there is no such option. True, you can declare war and then say make peace with them and I'll make peace with you. - Buying star charts maybe? I'd imagine a race selling maps as well as research.

- possible coordination with allies to attack enemies? like Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri

- Fleet attack and defense? Don't tell me a fleet is an organizational unit! I have 12 corvettes! I want them to work together and take out a dreadnought! It's okay if I lose like 3 or 4!
At the moment, I have to send them one by one against a dreadnought which is sheer suicide, or when defending against a battleship with 40 drone fighters, the fighters die one by one while defending, as opposed to the battleship dying, and me losing 15 drone fighters.
- The usual ZOE, more races, naming individual planets, more tech, more stars, etc...

Alien Tech Victory? Whazat?

Ancient Tech Victory?
More use for a Survey Ship. Land on a planet and search for Lifeforms, Mineral Deposites, or Rare Earths (etc.) that could be used to enhance you Empire (this would require landing a colony ship or Starbases would need to be allowed to utilize the planet as a resource). There could be conceivable moral consequences as well. Or maybe search for Ancient Artifacts, Civilizations, clues for locations of Ancient Military Installations containing a Precursor Heavy Cruiser or Precursor Weapon tech (or part of the tech needed) or Cause for Precursor disapperance, etc.

Starbases having another subassembly (category, classification, whatever) of Research!

#34 by Citizen Ajosin... Yes! Starbases should have a region of control not affected by sectors!

Sure would be nice to see the Capital icons on the Planet screen or Planet list screen somewhere. In otherwords, what planets have completed Capital class social projects?

#40 by Citizen Benjamin Fan... Threats don't work when you're a nice species... Now I know I never got to reply as you suggest but every time I tried by selecting what I want, which wasn't much "Smokum peacepipe wif dem", they always replied... "Some say you are destined... but we will not...". Useless diplomacy.

If MOO3 got one thing right it was the fleet structure. Capital ships surrounded by support ships. In GC as the game progresses, anything less than a Battleship is pointless. I use Dreadnoughts for colony defense!

#40 by Citizen Benjamin Fan... I agree! A fleet of Corvettes, oh lets say 100, all get wiped out and cause little if any dammage to a single Battleship or even Battle Hammer. Riiiighhht!

While I miss designing my own ships, and commanding them individually, I could live with a fully automated and viewable battle sequence provided it was sensible and realistic. Provided lesser class vessels served a purpose. As others have suggested, this can be an option to view or just escaped (Escape key). This way everyone would get to see there newest capital ship in combat at least once.
A single Excaliber could devastate an enemy... Unless in the hands of the AI. They aren't smart enuf to return to port for repairs.

#21 by Citizen E-Tigger... Use the pause key and give new orders. Use a time compress key. Ala Homeworld!

I miss the different weapon types and classes. In GC weapon and defense techs are +10 Attack, +10 Defense, +10 Hitpoints... This makas ship design pointless. Although I suppose it would be possible to subtract from defense and hitpoints and add this to attack. Kind of boring though.

#17 by Citizen Patrick Heneghan... I too miss Carriers and Fighters. This was done superbly in Pax Imperia Imminent Domain. And because I could design my own ships I could create pseudo-carriers before any other Race. My strategy was to refit a colony transport vessel. Fighters and bobmers could realisticly reduce an enemy fleet to space dust or at the very least make the difference between victory and defeat!

I too want tactical battles... I Don't understand why tactical combat doesn't fit in GC or why people don't like it... It seems to me that if it doesn't fit in GalCiv then it doesn't fit in MOO 1, 2, 3 or any other 4x game. What am I missing?
How many battles are you guys in??? Throughout my games I may have a dozen maybe two. So two-dozen tactical combats is going to slow my game down and make it tedious? I don't think so. Instead it's going to be more enjoyable! Tactical combat does break up the monontony of micromanaging the Economic sliders...
IIRC MOO 1 or 2 had an automated option that meant the player never had to control the tactical combat phase if still being forced to watch it. Of course the AI was stoopid enuf to reduce your fleet to space dust. Soooo, again, make it an option for those who don't want it but don't deny me this pleasure! Because I for one, don't find tactical combat tedious! What better way to test the design of your new ship and the enemies capabilities? More than once I went back to the drawing board, changing my ship design to account for my enemy's defenses. I have similarly seen the AI do the same to counter my offensive ability (sans soap).

I should have missed something: I was under the impression that when a fleet was attacking, the combat would end only when the following appears:
- the whole attacking fleet is defeated
- the defending ship is defeated

I have played MOO1 and MOO2. I have enjoyed tactical combat in MOO1 but I was ennoyed by it in MOO2. The reason was simple: in MOO1, you have up to 6 stacks of ship. So you need to worry to move only 6 stack. In MOO2, you don't have stack. Instead, each ship was on the screen. So tactical combat was tedious and took lotsof time when big fleet where engaged in combat.

More, I remember reading an article from Frogboy explaining why they haven't put tactical combat in GC. To summarize, and if I remember correctly, it would be more tedious than fun, and the AI can't be clever enough to be a good opponent at creating ship and doing tactical combat

Since we are in a thread about a wishlist, I would like to have the following, that I have already mentionned in the thread "detail of a tribute":
being able to know about the current tributes: what are the monthly amount and when they expire.
It could be in the screen that explain the percentage of an alien civ's economy due to trade the the percentage that is due to trade with us.
